  1. Free Speech and the IndieWeb

    brennan.day · 2026-08-08 02:00 UTC · details

A couple days ago, I wrote the blog post titled "Five Interesting Indie Platforms You Might Not Have Heard Of". I was really happy with it—being able to share the work of others that deserve support and can help foster digital indie communities. But, regrettably, I had to rescind one of my recommendations. Let me explain. As I mentioned in the post itself, BlueDwarf's "rule enforcement is informal, and I admit I've stumbled upon some... peculiar opinions and takes during my time on the platform,…

  2. Not Having an Opinion

    Blog - Contains Moderate Peril · 2026-08-07 23:05 UTC·Roger Edwards · details

If you visit the websites for such UK tabloid newspapers as the Daily Express or the Daily Mail you will no doubt encounter prominent stories about Megan Markle, Nigel Farage and “immigrants”. If these two august institutions are short of column inches, they’ll run a piece about how some former celebrity has had the unmitigated gall and temerity to get old. I mean WTF? How dare they do what human beings are genetically disposed to do. It’s outrageous. Similarly, head over to the Unherd website a…

  3. State of the Family

I’m using Blaugust as an excuse to push myself to write more regularly about my film podcasting, so far so good. Got one post out over each of the last four days, and this one will make five. I still have to catch up on two days, but given I’m finding a groove and there’s no travel on deck—the good money is on me nailing it. This is not my first blog rodeo, people, I’m a veteran. While you flog yourself, I blog myself into a frenzy of cultural genius. Anyway, our most recent series on indie inte…

  4. ‘It Wasn’t a Civil War. It Was the Slaveholders’ Rebellion.’

    JAG’s Workshop · 2026-08-06 01:36 UTC·Jason Anthony Guy · details

Anthony Conwright, in a guest essay for The New York Times Opinion section (gift link): Rebranding rebellion is nothing new. Americans take it for granted that the war between the Confederate states and the Union was always called the Civil War, but it was not. During the war and in its aftermath, it was primarily called an “insurrection” or a “rebellion.” Its current name is a result of decades of lobbying by Confederate heritage groups and white Southerners committed to rejuvenating the South’…

  5. The Altoholic Confession

    MMO Casual · 2026-08-05 15:00 UTC·Joar · details

I have a main. An undead warlock that I've been playing for over 19 years, and never seriously wavered. And I still can't stop rolling alts. Both of those things are true, and if that sounds like a contradiction, welcome to my armory page. The 52 characters that I leveled to max in War Within Here's how it goes. I'll be perfectly happy on the warlock, chipping away at whatever the current thing is, and then I'll see a class and race combo that I don't have, or a class gets reworked, or Blizzard…

  6. The Politics of Care

    Heart Soul Machine · 2026-08-05 00:00 UTC · details

Most democratic parties are built around an underlying ideology that drives not just their appeal, but the principles guiding their decisions. Conservative politics is, at its core, about conserving the status quo – slowing change, maintaining what exists, keeping control of the conditions. That's a coherent position. Labour movements emerged as a direct counterweight, built around workers' rights at a time when labour had been so devalued it amounted to exploitation on a massive scale. They pla…

The mother of Mikaeil Mirdoraghi, a third-grade student grade student killed in U.S. airstrike on primary school in Minab: I had prepared dinner for him and when he was eating he said: “Mom, the food you made tastes like heaven.” I said: “My son, why are you saying this? You’ve never said this before.” Around midnight he put pillows around himself and sat with his brother. He said: “Brother, let’s play. I’m Iran and you’re America. Let’s play with guns and tanks.” They started playing together.…

  8. smolcopy, a voters day parade

I sit in my easy chair, a hotel sec deposit arriving at 6 AM which brought about a walk to get fruit from WM. I was already at WM to buy the fruit when the refund hit, I just decided to get a bit more. Two cartons of smokes. Snacks and cigs through the day. I felt like I wanted to visit some old sites. Blogs. Landing pages. I looked up Neil Ungerleider, a former Fast...something journalist, former blogger for journal of a journalist. Different life and times now. The temp edges higher in my livi…

  9. Raise the Red Lantern

    bavatuesdays · 2026-08-04 20:33 UTC·Reverend · details

With this episode, number 72, Michael Branson Smith and I are 4 films deep into our series on international independent films from the 90s. We started down under with Muriel’s Wedding (1994), then we headed up to Tehran for The White Balloon (1995) then on to working class England with Life is Sweet (1990) then we jumped over to 1920s China for Raise the Red Lantern (1991). Like many of the films from this series, I first experienced them as a young 20-something in independent movie houses in an…

  10. Norfolk county DA candidate

    nosrednayduj · 2026-08-03 23:42 UTC · details

Today's political action is not being counted, because it wasn't a protest. Valerie and I went to a candidate's meet and greet. Our county is having an election for the district attorney, and there have been a couple of high-profile scandal-ridden cases recently which have caused the current DA to choose not to run for reelection. There are 7 candidates, which is kind of a lot. We met Macy Lee, who is a woman of Chinese descent. She's been an attorney for three decades, on both sides of the cour…

  11. Labor are the new conservatives

    Heart Soul Machine · 2026-08-03 00:00 UTC · details

The Labor Party are now the conservatives. I've been sitting with this for a big chunk of the year, turning it over and over. I keep coming back to the same conclusion: the Australian Labor Party no longer represents working people in any meaningful sense. Not in its policies, not in its priorities, and not in the people who run it. This didn't happen in a vacuum. The Liberal Party's drift toward the hard right created a space in the centre, and Labor moved into it – partly as an electoral calcu…

  12. Action #20 – finally

    nosrednayduj · 2026-08-01 15:16 UTC · details

We went back to the bridge Friday and they were actually doing it. This time we had a nonpartisan PSA of "vote! Register by 8/22" I'm not sure if we also had "primary 9/1". Massachusetts has a very short time between the primary and the general for nonpresidential races. Because we lean so heavily Democratic, the primary is almost the general for most races. Apparently we are possibly going to the "jungle primary" plan, which might actually be better because of this. For example we have 6 people…
