We have a lot of stuff. And I mean a lot. We live in a rather large house with a lot of storage space and over the years, particularly since the children all moved out, we've filled most of it up.
So, now we're vaguely thinking about moving to somewhere smaller and more manageable for our twilight years, we're going to have to do something about that. And since it's going to be a long job, even though it's very unlikely we'll be going anywhere for a couple of years, I've already started on my ha…

If you couldn’t find yesterday’s post, that was my fault. I put the wrong time in the published date. I didn’t realize it until after I woke up.
Yesterday I thought I had spammed the discovery feed after multiple posting attempts. I had originally written about the pancake breakfast I made. I wasn’t able to find it on the top of recents, so I disregarded the draft.
Then I answered the Bear blog questions from Ava after reading Peige’s (aka Pretend Typewriter) own answers. I wanted to try for mys…

Since 2024, I’ve rarely left the house without my Hobonichi Weeks planner in my bag, and I’ve never missed an entry, achieving the rare and elusive “planner peace” with this journaling form factor. There are more than enough notes pages for me to record TTRPG sessions and process my thoughts through journaling on the go when needed. Though I’ve debating getting a five-year journal in the past, I love the thrill of a new Weeks cover too much to give that up. As we make our way through August, the…

This year I wanted to flesh out my reference book collection a little bit when it comes to art. I have a few books, but I’d like to get a few more on anatomy, and colour theory. I’ve never really been able to draw people, sticking to mostly organic shapes and landscapes, but it’s something that has always been on my ‘wish list’ so to speak. So I’ve been doing a bit of research, and plan on doing a bit of shopping (eventually).
One ‘must have’ I grabbed, is the book pictured above – A Dictionary…

I don't know if you're familiar with Storyworth, but it's a site dedicated to capturing your loved one's memories and keeping them in a book. A year ago, my wife "gave" me a year subscription to the site (part-time job) for my birthday and said "DO IT!" I'm like, but what about my stack of journals and blogs?
Some of those journal entries are adorably written in crayon
Her response was, "There's no way I'm reading your stack of journals! That is crazy, and I can barely read your handwriting!" Ok…

I realize I have spent a lot of my time writing about videogames here, and not focusing much on most of my other hobbies. I guess I just want to ramble about something different today, so why not?
The other day I saw a post on a reading group I found in some mainstream social media platform that shall remain unnamed, and it was all about how great The Night Land and The House on The Borderland by William Hope Hodgson were, but what I found most intriguing was how many people were fans of these w…

A week of Blaugust, a honkaku mystery, some music for Bandcamp Friday, Traitors NZ, and more Zelda.
We are a week into Blaugust and I have managed a post a day so far. However next Monday I'm back to work for a full seven days so will probably not continue that pace. Probably another link post on Monday or Tuesday and a digest on Friday at least. I also need to spend some more time job hunting. I am only really employed at my current job until the end of September. Which isn't that far away. Try…

This is a letter I wrote years ago in response to a challenge. For it you had to write something to a quality you wished you had more of.
I've rewritten it to reflect who I am today.
What would your letter be to?
Dear courage,
I thought I’d write a letter to you instead of diving into my life to find stories that will put me in your light.
That is so hard to do as I don’t see myself as a very courageous person.
You see, courage, as I’m writing this I am in bed, comfortably miserable. Days on end…

I do not do any Phoneblogging. Zero. None. Zilch. The closest I get is reading my RSS reader and saving posts to a blog ideas list. As I get older, I just don't want to mess with my phone for in-depth things, and blogging, for me, qualifies as something in depth. I scroll Mastodon, I scroll my RSS reader, I get Home Assistant alerts, and I scroll Instagram reels for fun. That's pretty much the only things I use my phone for. Oh, I guess I use it to ask Rachelle questions when I'm grocery shoppin…

Richard Adams’ Watership Down (New York: Macmillan, 1972) is one of the classic works of xenofiction (the fiction set in strange cultures, real or imagined), placed as it is among and between the warrens of rabbits in the English countryside. Lapine, the language he sketches for his rabbits, is arguably the best naming language ever created, and is a minimalist virtuoso performance, a haiku of a language compared to the sonnet of Sindarin.
The following documentation of the language is derived f…

Adding to the fun of this Hugo migration, I accidentally published all my draft posts this morning.
If you happened to see the actual words of those posts (they might be cached in your feed reader), I realize you now can’t unsee them. My sincerest condolences.
I’ll do a followup post once I figure out what happened and how exactly I fixed it.

The deal is done. Capital management, unfettered capitalism, and political corruption has won again. Electronic Arts has been acquired by the Saudis in a completely economically non-viable deal that saddles the company with a huge amount of debt that will be used as a boat anchor to sink the remains of the organization once the vultures pick off the best bits.
Electronic Arts – Early Days Logo
It is, once again, the victory of greed over any attempt to actually make products or provide a service…

High Violet
图1 《High Violet》專輯封面
专辑信息
专辑名称: High Violet
歌手: The National

If Emily Dickinson had written her poems on her Wordpress blog, her host would have deleted them outright when the bill came due. Instead, her sister found 1,800 poems written on paper and stored in a drawer. Words written on paper take an intentional decision to destroy them whereas words written online usually require an intentional decision to keep them. In this modern blogging age how do we make our writing last?
I do not have any important writing on this blog but I do want my family to hav…

Well ripgrep is the antidote to that feeling. It’s just mind-bogglingly fast. I flippin’ love ripgrep. I use it for so much stuff.
Anyway, today I found a nice snippet that lists all my blog posts that are still in draft status:

This is specifically in reference to handwriting like it's 1895 where I am learning a more formal Victorian script. But it applies to any kind of learning.
Lesson the first: I can be - am often - a lazy bastard. Lazy is also a fun word to write in fancy cursive.
It is often easier to learn something completely new than unlearn or adjust something you already know. Zs are so different - I've never completely messed one up. Poor form, sure. Whereas Bs are almost the same except they attach the oth…

I stumbled upon the Duck and Cover book series (author: Benjamin Wallace) entirely by accident. In this instance I was sucked in by the marketing blurbs comparing the series to something by Douglas Adams with dark comedy and characterization. The books are definitely good: not Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett good, but worthy of a read.
The premise and books
There are six books currently in the series plus a book of short stories. The main series focuses on Jerry aka The Librarian aka a post-apo…

I love fountain pens. For a few years now I’ve started collecting a handful of cheaper pens to experiment with and figure out what sort of nib I enjoyed. I’ve got a few EF (extra fine), some M (medium) and some F (fine). I learned there’s a difference between EF in the East, and EF in the West, depending on manufacturers. I don’t own a broad nib yet, but that is on my list. None of my pens are particularly expensive, minus the one that I inherited from my MIL when she passed. From front left to…

Week 1 of Blaugust is themed as the “Welcome to Blaugust” week – but arguably, I’ve already covered the literal facts of the event, and my reasons for taking part, in my prior Week #0 post. However, I don’t want to divert too far from the main theme, so I’ve instead decided to answer a larger question, which is: why do I write? I started writing consistently on this site more than half a decade ago, and it’s fair to say that lots has changed in the meantime. I’ve been formulating and thinking ab…
