My weekly blog post. Links this week include an elemental chart showing which ones are safe to lick, the Usenet Archives and a repository of 3D scanned images of publically accessible restrooms. You can meet Emerald, the mosaic kitty and I talk about my recent hip surgery. Plus, as usual, I listened to, read and watched things.

Same bridge, biked there. Message: "UNIONS BUILT USA", lots of support. The organizer said she liked this message because a lot of union members are Trump supporters, even though he is antiunion, and so it's hard for them to be against this message! Maybe it will also make them think.

ISRO announced and successfully launched the GSLV-F17 mission after my last blog post. I am not claiming my blog post had any role in the launch or the success thereafter. Only, that the launch happened.
It seems that there were efforts on to undermine ISRO by not letting it launch missions that were ready and already at Satish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC, Sriharikota).
It seems that the questions raised by Madhavan Nair (in Malayalam, in English) and (perhaps) in parallel by Unions within ISRO (a…

Don’t worry, I can connect to Wi-Fi networks, I just lost mobile data access and phone calls with my current SIM chip.
You see, the silly government of my beautiful country decided that the best way to stop scam, blackmail and other crimes via phone calls would be to force everyone into registering their phone numbers with their ID card and a face scan with the phone’s camera.
A huge percentage of the population never did this on the original deadline and the plan utterly failed. No phone compan…

Six weeks before a new federal rule stripping Medicaid and CHIP funding for transgender healthcare is set to take effect nationwide, a coalition of 21 attorneys general and one governor has filed a lawsuit to block it. The coalition, co-led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta alongside the attorneys general of Illinois, Maryland, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The lawsuit targets a ru…

On Tuesday it was the Massachusetts primary. I volunteered to work at the election. It was interesting, but also slightly boring. In my town, they allow you to volunteer/work for only half the day, which is good because it starts at 6:30 in the morning and doesn't end until after 10 PM. Apparently in some towns it's all or nothing – I was talking to a friend who also volunteers for the polls and she was surprised we had a half day option. I worked in the afternoon, you are not surprised. I wore…

My new weekly routine for September.
So it looks like I'll be working on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 15:00-22:00.
☺ The work week is over by Tuesday.
☹ Back-to-back work days are gonna be tough.
First week of work
I'm not going to get into specifics because frankly, I don't want to think about it. On Monday, my boss was there. She's a sharp and strict woman who you don't want to mess with. She said she's mostly in service now and rarely works in the kitchen, but since it was my first day an…

For my entire life, I have been aware that I must die, and that my time alive is finite. This has always been a helpful motivator in doing important things, such as writing hundreds of words each day. When you recognize the timescale of epochs and eras, you also recognize how short your own existence is, and how pressing and urgent your actions must be.
And for the most part, this has oriented me towards good—I want to try to leave the world better than I found it, and make use of my capabilitie…

I'm somebody who's written rather extensively on generative AI ethics, and I feel there is a lot that is unethical about the current corporate climate and culture surrounding the technology. And when I write about LLMs and chatbots, I'm careful not to make judgments about the people using the end products—I don't think you're a bad person if you use ChatGPT or Claude, or whatever.
What I'm discussing today is different. There is no room for debate or argument, here—only hard, absolute lines in t…

Hey There!
It's 11:38 AM EDT, 74°F, Humidity 87%, Wind SW 9 MPH, rain/overcast
It's gonna be a short post today, as I've just come back from a morning colonoscopy. More on that tomorrow (like you really want to know!).
The reason for the short post is that yesterday was prep day. I spent the entire day at home taking it easy. I did put a charger on the motor home's coach battery to re-charge it, but other than that I vegged out on the couch passing the time with YouTube. I had to fast with a liq…

Anyone inside or outside the US that thinks they're safe relying on American tech providers and financial institutions should consider how quickly and enthusiastically they carried out the diktats of the Trump regime.
Just in the last week, Google changed Google Maps' references from Lake Ontario to Lake America, and Paypal and the Internet Society froze financial assets and domain names of Autistici/Inventati.
You risk instant humiliation, immiseration, and social death at the whims of a corrup…

…and sometimes, unreality is intentional and benign.
Today, Ars Technica posted an article with a header image featuring a keyboard modified to add an “Ars Subscribe” button. But the keyboard looked weird: the visible keys looked like this:
OPGU↵ LS., OC/[Ars Subscribe]
The extra letters, especially the two O keys, immediately drew accusations of AI slop generation.
And yet the image was credited to Aurich Lawson / Getty.
I figured Lawson had grabbed a stock image without noticing it was slop an…

Google:
The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has formally changed the name for “Lake Ontario” to “Lake America” in the United States. Since we update Google Maps to reflect name changes in official government sources, which is GNIS for the U.S., people using Maps in the U.S. will see “Lake America,” those in Canada will continue to see “Lake Ontario,” and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names. These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water wit…

This post is my response to the 32-Bit Cafe "Back To School 2026" prompt:
"Make an educational/informative page (blog post, tutorial, etc) that about something that "everybody already knows". Believe it or not, not everyone knows about this thing or knows how to do this other thing. But _you_ know; why not share that knowledge?"

I like what I see in the trailer and am just happy to know how long approximately it takes. And to be honest, I don’t care how long it really does take in the end as long as I will eventually get the game… looking at you, Pr…

We have a game in my family where we work out how we can blame things on Margaret Thatcher. If the problem predates Margaret Thatcher, then enclosure. Otherwise, the Normans.
Here's a fun article, A Short History of Enclosure in Britain and by fun I mean utterly enraging:
Over the course of a few hundred years, much of Britain's land has been privatized — that is to say taken out of some form of collective ownership and management and handed over to individuals. Currently, in our "property-ownin…

I have a legal esthetics room in my home. In 2024, I cut back greatly on clients because my reading business was taking off. This year, it just died. I haven't done enough readings this year to consider it any sort of income stream. I do a handful each weekend at The Alchemist, and apart from one or two every couple of months online, that is about it.
I kept a small clutch of clients who get Brazilians. They're ladies who have been with me for five years. They don't want to go anywhere else, and…

I love baked ziti. Growing up in Connecticut every event called for a baked ziti. It is the east coast equivalent of the midwestern hot dish. Your neighbors invited you to a backyard barbecue? You can count on a tinfoil tray of ziti next to the burgers. Going to a pot-luck with your coworkers? Phil from accounting got that zeet.1 Italian-American food is my comfort food and ziti is, among them, uniquely nostalgic for me. It is simple to make and beloved by almost everyone.
Over the past few week…
