At the beginning of the year I wrote ideas for 2026 and updated with progress on 2026 in March. Then again halfway through the year. The beginning of September does not seem like the obvious next check-in. But I slow down dramatically in the autumn and winter. Also, it's my birthday so that feels like a natural time. We've had some excellent storms this past week. I love a good thunderstorm.

Repeat of last week's standout on an overpass; this week's message was also fairly nonpartisan: "vote today = change tomorrow".
Bicycled there again (4 miles), then headed out for an additional 8.5 miles to bring myself back home. While we were standing on the overpass it was threatening to rain. We have had no rain in the Castlegar region since early in July: almost a month of totally dry weather. This was made worse when a high pressure zone moved in to the area two weeks ago, trapping the forest fire smoke from half the province in our valleys. Rain has finally arrived, and I am relieved.

My enemy is at the gates, and I can do nothing about it. It’s hot. Again. And it, as well as the rain coming have wrecked my plans for tomorrow. I wanted to finish my yard, do some work on cleaning up the enclosure I have my garbage cans in, but, it’s supposed to rain. Today it was up around 90F/32.2C, with a Feels Like of 99/37.2. Yesterday had me wobbly trying to mow, today would have boiled me alive. My frustration at the weather grows.

It was hot and sticky, as predicted. It wouldn't have been any better the following day, we determined after living through today. The rain stayed away until the very last minute and we were able to chuck some things under the canopy and no damage was done to anything.

The smoke has settled across our valleys here in Castlegar. Exactly where the air pollution originates is a hard question to answer: there are wildfires in nearly every direction within a few hundred kilometres. But the outcome is obvious.

A smart thermostat was one of the first connected devices I purchased when I started building our smart home.
