Vancouver has a reputation for being a very rainy city. I would expect that if you only vaguely know of Vancouver, your main impression would be that it rains a lot. When I was preparing to move here, that was all I heard. Everyone warned me about all the rain. "Prepare yourself, you're going to be sick of all that rain!" I really wasn't bothered. Rain was a novelty for me and I was excited to move to Vancouver. Having a few more opportunities to look out the window and listen to The National while drinking tea seemed completely fine to me. After living here for almost 6 years, I feel like it isn't as rainy as I expected. I mean, I started to form that opinion early on but I thought perhaps I just haven't lived here long enough to get sick of it. But now enough time has passed and I haven't changed my mind, so what gives? Where's all the rain? We're just finishing off a beautiful, if way too hot summer, that had almost no rain. (Of course as I write this blog post, it's raining). But I also wonder if I just have a confirmation bias happening. Maybe I'm just wrong. Do I pay more attention in the summer, when it's too hot out and I want a rainy day break? Do I block out the weeks of rain in the winter? I found the perfect website to answer my question. weatherstats.ca From St. John's to Victoria, Canadians love to brag about the weather that they endure (or enjoy!). Surely their community must get the most in the entire country! God this quote is so real. Love to talk about being #1 in something, whether it's rain or snow, cold or hot. This website pulls publicly available weather data from Environment Canada and puts it together in map and list view. But my favourite page is the "Winning Cities" page. And look, here's Vancouver's page! According to this data, it's #9 rainiest city out of 100 other Canadian cities. Surprisingly not number 1, but still pretty high on the list. Especially when I compare it to Alberta (Alberta cities don't show up on the list until #75). So I definitely moved to a rainier place but it isn't 110% rain like I expected. I'll take it lol. I'm intrigued at what Vancouver is #1 in: fewest freezing days and warmest year round. Seems like a pretty nice place to be, but if I'm honest, I miss my snow & winter. I'm also curious how this has changed over time. I wouldn't be surprised if it really did used to be super rainy and that's changed with climate change. Some coworkers told me that there used to be so much more snow here many years ago compared to now. I also think people just love to complain about the weather. We just finished a hot summer where everyone was complaining about the heat, and now today the first cool day in ages, everyone's complaining about the rain and the coolness.
