We have had no rain in the Castlegar region since early in July: almost a month of totally dry weather. This was made worse when a high pressure zone moved in to the area two weeks ago, trapping the forest fire smoke from half the province in our valleys. Rain has finally arrived, and I am relieved.

My enemy is at the gates, and I can do nothing about it. It’s hot. Again. And it, as well as the rain coming have wrecked my plans for tomorrow. I wanted to finish my yard, do some work on cleaning up the enclosure I have my garbage cans in, but, it’s supposed to rain. Today it was up around 90F/32.2C, with a Feels Like of 99/37.2. Yesterday had me wobbly trying to mow, today would have boiled me alive. My frustration at the weather grows.

It was hot and sticky, as predicted. It wouldn't have been any better the following day, we determined after living through today. The rain stayed away until the very last minute and we were able to chuck some things under the canopy and no damage was done to anything.

The smoke has settled across our valleys here in Castlegar. Exactly where the air pollution originates is a hard question to answer: there are wildfires in nearly every direction within a few hundred kilometres. But the outcome is obvious.

A smart thermostat was one of the first connected devices I purchased when I started building our smart home. I wanted automatic presence detection so the thermostat could set an away mode when we leave and "we're home" mode without us having to do anything.
