This post is my contribution to the September 2026 IndieWeb Carnival topic "Parenting", hosted by winther:
https://winther.sysctl.dk/indieweb-carnival-september-2026-parenting/
My parents are good people, and I think about this often. About how lucky I am to have had a childhood free from abuse, trauma, or neglect. To have had an adolescence where I was encouraged, supported, and redirected towards interests and passions that have stayed with me into adulthood. In this life I have been blessed i…

Cat pics from the summer house
First post since Blaugust was over, pretty easy to fall out of established routine. Even though it also was my birthday this week, so I have an excuse. Probably last crazy week out of this visit home, summer is over, birthday season almost finished, just a couple of things left to sort out before travelling.
Monday was still Blaugust with my final posts. I did play more MMOs with Stars Reach and SpiritVale. Did play more Breathedge 2 right before it released in Ear…

Just a quick post today to say that we're celebrating our girl's second birthday!
She started her morning by going to the dog park, where she saw her friends and played fetch to her heart's content. Danny stopped by a coffee shop on the way home, where she got a pup cup with a treat. After arriving home, she's had plenty of cuddles and more playtime.
I bought her a peanut butter-filled cow hoof (which you can see off to the right in the picture above), but she hasn't done much with it yet. She l…

My parents are great, but they are also of a different generation, and despite the amount of people around their age that I’ve met online that somehow align with many of my hobbies, everyone is different, and well, that’s the case for them.
Something I admire about my mom is how she still learns, she studies a lot and gets into online courses of all kinds. Unfortunately, she also is prone to being scammed by Facebook ads or misinformation spread through videos and posts there. I have managed to…

My mother celebrated her 91st birthday last week, and I was thrilled to be able to spend time with her. I spent a week visiting with her and my father, also 91, and their friends. We went out to dinner with a long time family friend, and I sat in on my mother’s Bible study … Continue reading Hanging With the Old People →

Hey There!
It's 8:11 AM EDT, 76°F, Humidity 74%, W 11 mph SW, overcast
It's an unusual morning, as the humidity seems very high along with a fairly high morning temperature. And all this without sunshine. Today is the beginning of meteorological fall, and the weather already has a different flavor to it.
Yesterday I got an early start because I had to get to an audiology appointment two hours away in Son2's city. I kind of regret having made these appointments so far away, but so it goes. I did…

The wife and I left our 10- and 12-year-old kids at home last night and set off walking to a nearby restaurant.
Our dinner instructions: “Can you guys just figure it out?”
Their response: “Yep.”
And they did and were fine.
We’ve come a long way. 😅

I be a Beatle …
Well, here we are at the end of August, with a whole month of blogging under my belt, not one day missed. Which is, in and of itself, a miracle. It’s been a busy month, one full of special anniversaries, a few emergencies, and a lot of walks out and about to take photos for Stray Pixels, my photo blog.
It’s also been a month of highs and los (due to those anniversaries and emergencies) which when all is said and done, is life in a nutshell. I’m here, I’m writing and I’ve had anot…

Day 31. I made it.
I want to sit with that for a second, because I've signed up for Blaugust before and I have never once finished it. Not close. I'd get eight or nine days in, life would do what life does, and the whole thing would quietly stop. Thirty-one straight days of posting has been on my list of things I'd get to eventually for years.
This was the year. And this was the year for one reason, which I said on Day 1 and will say again on the last day. Bel built this thing, Bel isn't here, a…

Blaugust isn't over technically, I know. But I have my monthlog scheduled for tomorrow so I'm good to go. In the grand tradition of such things, here's what I learned.
I didn't keep an actual count but I have added at least six new people to my blogroll, RSS reader, what have you, from the official participant list. I really enjoyed reading everyone's blogs for 132 Blaugust posts and I'm going to do another one after the month is properly over.
While I posted every day there's no way I would hav…

This is the post I've rewritten the most times this month, and I still don't love it, which is usually a sign the subject is real.
Here's the situation, stated plainly. I've been married a long time. I have three kids, now 30, 21 and 18. I spent thirty-five years in a career that took a great deal of me. And through all of it I have played this game, most weeks, for nineteen years. Those facts have never sat comfortably next to each other.
The time is the easy part, and it's not actually easy. T…

Yesterday I mentioned I'd played through the latest story episode in Neverness To Everness but I didn't say much about it, other than that I enjoyed it. Let's fix that.
The episode goes by the name "Fogden Game" and when I saw that I did wonder for a moment whether it was going to be a second game-within-a-game, like 999 Nights. That was a worrying moment. I think they got away with it once but...
Luckily, it's nothing of the kind. The story carries on from exactly where it left off, at the end…

Subtitle: Reflection on blogging, and the struggles of sharing
For those who don’t know, Blaugust is a writing challenge to write 31 blog posts during the month of August. If you’re new to my blog, it’s nice to meet you!
Writing with a laptop, stock image by Nick Morrison
I only planned to get the bronze award, which is to just write five blog posts (~1 a week). And this is the last one. Very grateful I did it. It gave me a chance to update my blog with some much needed fixes, including:

I didn't mean to drop off the face of the Earth this last week of Blaugust, but that seems to have happened. I continued to write daily though, even if just a few words. This is some of those bits pieced together.

The husband has gone to Japan for a few weeks and I've been left to my own devices, which means:
I was obsessed with solving this one work problem and then suddenly it was 1 a.m.
A mug of hot chocolate for lunch. And a lot of frozen calzones for dinners.
Extra sticky cats.
Strands of…

We have a game in my family where we work out how we can blame things on Margaret Thatcher. If the problem predates Margaret Thatcher, then enclosure. Otherwise, the Normans.
Here's a fun article, A Short History of Enclosure in Britain and by fun I mean utterly enraging:
Over the course of a few hundred years, much of Britain's land has been privatized — that is to say taken out of some form of collective ownership and management and handed over to individuals. Currently, in our "property-ownin…

I mentioned my roommate's dog had their own song, but my own dog had one too! Well, there were plenty of silly little songs for my dog. There was one in particular my wife found equal parts ridiculous and annoying.
H.Y.C.Y.BH? by Tom Cardy
I didn't sing the whole song. Really it was a snippet which got the lyrics changed to "Let me see your butthole". My dog was older (my wife had her for close to ten years before we moved in together). We would take her outside to do her business at the slighte…

Sopan Deb, reporting for The New York Times (gift link):
Mr. Cullen has said his favorite voice role was the one with which he was most closely associated: Optimus Prime, the honor-bound protagonist of the “Transformers” franchise, which began as a television cartoon series in 1984, based on a popular set of toys.
His take on the character was inspired by his brother Larry, who had served with the Marines in Vietnam. The brothers were roommates when Mr. Cullen auditioned for a role in the series…

We have added a kitten to our clowder as of August 2, 2026, and her name is Sapphire. Before you ask: this means we now have four cats, three in the main house and one in my office over the garage. Yes that is a lot of cats. No, I didn’t really want to have more cats. Yes, Irene begged and cajoled me for days.
That all being said, the little Siamese-like kitten (she’s about 7 months old) has moved in with our two boys quite well. There was a little bit of hissing from Magpie (Pie), but Corbie wa…

In the last post, I wrote about how you can feel your attention being taken for granted by a family member. As a result of it, it’s possible to feel disrespected and to be hurt from it. That begs the question — why do you get hurt?
The Indian spiritual figure Jiddu Krishnamurti says you’re hurt from a situation because you’ve a mental image or persona about yourself that feels hurt when someone says or does X or Y. The image is hurt, and you mistake it for being yourself. But is it possible to l…

A visit to the Lake District would not be complete without at least one walk to the top of a big hill. What with spouse and I not being regular users of shanks pony least of all up mountains I asked around for recommendations for a novices hill climb. Cat Bells was suggested and did not disappoint.
Cat Bells from Derwent Water. The climb starts from the right crosses over the ridge then up to the summit on the left.
This mini mountain sits near Derwent Water, close to Keswick. Described by Alfre…

I'm not someone who really embraces their heritage. My mother's side of the family is Polish through and through and I don't engage with the culture much despite living in an area where it's celebrated heavily.
Polka Music!
My grandparents would listen to polka music all the time. There was a local radio station that would play polka or at least had a weekly program to play it. I lived with my grandparents between college semesters for a few years. I remember one morning being on the porch with…

Have you ever had a family member, like your partner or a parent, invite someone over without checking with you? So now, you’re left with having to socialize with them whether you want it or not. If you had other commitments, you might reschedule them just because your partner committed you to something at the last minute (or you might not go along). Regardless, how did that make you feel?
Let’s say you decided to go with it. You might resent your family member for it. Neither can you enjoy the…

Hey There!
It's 7:56 AM EDT, 62°F, Humidity 76%, Wind 11 mph S, sunny, AQI 53.
We're back home after 6 days of travel. We had pretty spectacular weather during the whole trip, with warm but not hot days, and cool evenings. Our last evening in the ball park was so cool I felt I should have packed a hoodie.
Yesterday was mostly a matter of driving home. We did the morning motel routine, packing up, showering, having breakfast, and getting on the road. The drive back was easier that the drive out,…

My family love me as much as I love them. We tell each other all the time. But when I’m at my lowest is really when they show it.
Mum
She brought me a cake. A gigantic, fluffy sweet cake. What distinguishes this from a normal act of kindness is that she is usually the one making sure I don’t slowly die from malnutrition. Lots of vegetables and protein is usually her way. Not sweets. Feeding us is her love language, one passed down to her from her family line (hence why they are all overweight).…
