Thinking about music ahead of the music memories blog carnival and I need to exorcise these ear worms that are plaguing me.
The other week I watched Jurassic Park. It's still a great film. In part I thought to watch it because I heard the theme tune weeks earlier and the Jurassic Park theme is possibly my ultimate ear worm. Once it gets in it's there for weeks. So I thought I might as well watch the film and be singing it a few weeks more.
Last week we were away at my in-laws and did a forty-eig…

We are back with some more actual video game releases here in week thirty-six.
Fantasy Critic League – Like Fantasy Football, but for Video Games
We had four titles lined up for release in the league this week. Surely somebody much have made out with that many titles in play. But first we have to stop and look at where we ended up last week on the scoreboard.
Week 35 Scores
First out of the gate was The Blood of Dawnwalker, a open world dark fantasy title.

I want to share a dumb little side note on specifically these posts. One, I often write them throughout the week, as I do things, so I don’t forget. Sometimes they probably feel a bit disjointed for that, but I try to keep a flow. Second, when I write in Joplin, everything gets a date. Either the date written, or the date it gets published on the blog. Like I may write a review without a date, but once its scheduled, I add a date. Its sort of a way to keep track of if I need to push something to…

Working throught some organizational stuff in JIRA at work. The level of nested items with Inititatives containing Epics and them containing Stories can be a little difficult to know the state of things. I have some ideas on how to flatten the reporting.
Practiced guitar a couple times.
Should have read through these classes earlier if for no other reason than getting the books ordered. Had to wait to get the reading done and then Thursday happened.
Thursday storms took out a third of…

Blaugust 2026 is over. It wrapped up on Monday and here it is Saturday and I am finally summing up.
Blaugust 2026
I used to sum up very quickly after the event. But the gap has grown. Last year I didn’t sum up at all. I was too busy.
So how did Blaugust make me feel this year? Let me lay out a long winded foundation.
When you decide to collect something… beer cans, bottle caps, stamps, pilot’s wings, Hallmark Christmas ornaments, or whatever… the experience tends to go through a few distinct but…

Back in 2019, during Blaugust, I manged to make "Introduce Yourself Week" last the whole month. I wrote a series of posts, going through my musical life, from the age of about twelve up to what was then the present day. If you read any of those and (Even more unlikely.) of you remember any of what you read, some of what follows may sound a little familiar but this time it comes with documentary evidence!
While I was sorting through some papers a few weeks ago, I came across a photocopy of a revi…

I didn’t manage daily blogging past day 12, or 31 posts in the month. I wrote 20 posts, including reviews of two books, a game, my dying phone and its replacement. I also finished some older drafts and revived my dormant Les Mis blog with a Star Trek post (really). Read More…

For creators week (long past), I am listing the concerts attended since Blaugust 2025, concerts I will attend and concerts I'd like to attend. I hadn't seen the insert video from YouTube function in blogger. I'm guessing this is a new feature? I included a picture I took from every concert I attended as well so you are getting a lot more than my normal one picture per post (and no AI :)) and a link to the playlist. Also included Spotify links for those who prefer that. This took much longer to p…

Participating in Blaugust this year got me out of my cave.
I haven’t really written in quite some time, for a variety of reasons, but I wanted to push myself to start again this month. I din’t have a goal, at least not one that I said (or wrote) out loud. Knowing myself, deep down I wanted to write 31 posts, but I wasn’t going to pressure myself to do it. I’m already weighed down by a lot of other things. I didn’t want this to become one more thing.
I had absolutely no plan coming into this. I d…

It's the final Blaugust post! This was a nice little project and it gave me something to look forward to everyday. I was writing most of these on my lunch break so I kept them short. My theme was helpful to keep me going. I did brainstorm the post ideas in advance and wrote them a couple of days ahead of time so I had a buffer. I was going to link back to my older posts when appropriate, but I got lazy almost immediately. That being said, how about some odds and ends that didn't quite get a full…

On every year’s day 1, I make a list of the things I’ve really enjoyed last year, including books, comics, movies, television, documentaries, reality shows, albums, agricultural products, useful items, delicious food, software, websites… you can find it here: yearly best.
Because this article is too late for Blaugust, I’ve listed them all together, haha.
Many of the works in it are from Japan, Europe(I read mostly Poland, France, UK, Portugal), USA, thanks to China’s subtitling groups and publis…

Now, August 2026: Wrapping up Blaugust and other titbits
These days, I’m unsure of how to reply to simple questions like How are you?. My default response is now something along the lines of, health issues aside, I’m okay. Recently, an acquaintance replied to my feeble attempt at an answer with the unexpected Well, at least you’re still alive, right?. Fair point, I guess.
Brief Blaugust reflections
This month, I’ve written thirteen posts for Blaugust, including this one. I wasn’t aiming for any…

I finally played Megabonk, a... sigh... "Vampire-Survivors-like"[1] in glorious 3D.
I played Vampire Survivors when it was newish and there was a ton of hype around it. I distinctly remember thinking how interesting the concept was, how clever the idea was, and how difficult it must be to balance a game design like that. But what I was most struck by was how utterly forgettable it was to me.[2] For the first couple of days I was playing it on my steam deck (the ideal way to play these kind of ga…

A couple of weeks ago I bought an old Walkman, because I felt like listening to some tapes again; something that I hadn't done in at least 25 years. This set me on a path to look a bit more into old Hi-Fi equipment. Not old as in from the 70s and 80s, but older than what we have today, which is essentially just Bluetooth or Wifi speakers and not much else (unless you want to go high end). Something that can still play tapes and CDs (I haven't owned a proper CD player in probably two decades, eit…

It's already 4 weeks since the end of this year's edition of Nowe Horyzonty film festival in Wrocław, and I'm finally ready to post some recap of what I saw.
The most natural thing would be to end the post with a "would I go again?" section, but I kept wearing my festival pass on my work lanyard until this week1. I think that speaks for itself. I would do two things differently: lose a bit more money on a less distant hotel (even if the walks were healthy for me), and find someone to hang around…

We stood on the "new usual" bridge. Our message was "more Dolly, less Donald". Lots of support from the underbridge traffic. The organizer turns out to be a Dolly Parton fan, and she had a T-shirt and a sweatshirt from Dollywood. She also brought a boombox with a Dolly Parton playlist. The first one that played was Jolene, and I started to sing along, and then I burst into tears. Apparently I had a little grief to process. I'm not exactly a fan. I could sing along with Jolene, and some of 9 to 5…

🤘 I went to see Iron Maiden for the first time this weekend! It's something I've always wanted to do but never had the chance.
The funny thing is that I never thought it would be possible for me to see them. You know this “Run For Your Lives World” is celebrating their 50th anniversary, since their formation in 1975. And the set list is basically from their first album “Iron Maiden” from 1980 until their ninth album “Fear of the Dark” from 1992.
I didn't think they would still be doing big world…

Made some Jira qutomations to flow components information from Epics down to Stories. Theory here is that it is easier to set them on the Epic so it will save time getting these Stories to have a components value. This is important for some reporting things I am working on.
Practiced guitar a couple times but again not as much as I would like. Need to find a way to do that and work and school and other things around the house.

I am a married man so clearly I am required to share my wedding song.
Corn and Cheese by temp.
My wife and I had a hard time agreeing on what our song would be. She wanted something really lovey-dovey and I didn't want to agree to a song I didn't like. I had a hard time even coming up with suggestions. My fun pick would have been "You're My Number One" off the Sonic R soundtrack (too upbeat for a first dance song so it didn't feel appropriate) and my champion would have been for R.E.M.'s "At My…

A bit of travel this week. Work travel, but not the usual “go work at the other location” deal. Because I have a company car now, I had to go take a leader led defensive driving class. Because the class was scheduled for all day, I was allowed to go stay in a hotel for a couple of nights instead of driving back and forth super early and super late. So I went down Tuesday, and did some work at the office down there, went to the class Wednesday, and then back to do a bit more work at the remote of…

In which I mine my music collection for inspiration, and decide to have fun answering questions posed by song titles.
Where is my mind?
Asked by the Pixes, on Surfer Rosa
It's wandering, mostly. And by wandering, I mean it's traveling with no particular destination in mind, which is what I'd like physically be doing as well. I can tell you where my mind isn't: it's not on money, it's not on work, it's rarely on tech, and it's not even really on movies or video games these days, either. I'm actua…
