My weekly blog post. Links this week include an elemental chart showing which ones are safe to lick, the Usenet Archives and a repository of 3D scanned images of publically accessible restrooms. You can meet Emerald, the mosaic kitty and I talk about my recent hip surgery. Plus, as usual, I listened to, read and watched things.

It's the sixth of September already, somehow. Summer finally feels as though it's at an end, with the temperature outside right now a chilly +9C°, and the overcast sky a slate pewter with a biting wind. This is my absolute favourite kind of weather—no worries of sunburn and heatstroke. Of course, this is merely temporary, as we're going to reach a sunny high of +23C° on Wednesday. But for now, the chill is kind.
All the swaying leaves and foliage are still green—I can't help but question if they…

The first week back at work.
Happenings
So yeah, I started up back at work for the new school year. All the usual stuff to deal with. Updates to government policies to read. Leadership imploring all staff to do better. Chronic pain flares up with the stress. Still, I’m in a different classroom this year and it’s better than expected. My previous classroom had years (like, 10 years) of junk built up in old filing cabinets I never did get around to sorting out, so it was nice to come in to a relat…

Thinking about music ahead of the music memories blog carnival and I need to exorcise these ear worms that are plaguing me.
The other week I watched Jurassic Park. It's still a great film. In part I thought to watch it because I heard the theme tune weeks earlier and the Jurassic Park theme is possibly my ultimate ear worm. Once it gets in it's there for weeks. So I thought I might as well watch the film and be singing it a few weeks more.
Last week we were away at my in-laws and did a forty-eig…

First off, credit where credit is due. I pilfered the idea for this post from Mark Rogers who writes the Newsonaut blog. Apparently it’s a questionnaire that has been doing the rounds across various indie blogs for a while. However, it happens to ask some interesting questions about one’s reading habits. I read a book every month or so and I supplement this by listening to a lot of audiobooks. Yes, I’m aware they’re not the same thing entirely but both offer a means to consume and digest a book.…

We are back with some more actual video game releases here in week thirty-six.
Fantasy Critic League – Like Fantasy Football, but for Video Games
We had four titles lined up for release in the league this week. Surely somebody much have made out with that many titles in play. But first we have to stop and look at where we ended up last week on the scoreboard.
Week 35 Scores
First out of the gate was The Blood of Dawnwalker, a open world dark fantasy title.

Prettier is a JavaScript-based formatter that I use for this very site’s codebase, since it is quite extensible and can handle a wide variety of formats. I recently noticed a specific quirk with it where you need to specifically pre-format JSX in a certain way to get a specific output from it. With this source document and no formatting configured:

I want to share a dumb little side note on specifically these posts. One, I often write them throughout the week, as I do things, so I don’t forget. Sometimes they probably feel a bit disjointed for that, but I try to keep a flow. Second, when I write in Joplin, everything gets a date. Either the date written, or the date it gets published on the blog. Like I may write a review without a date, but once its scheduled, I add a date. Its sort of a way to keep track of if I need to push something to…

WHO – An author you would love to have a ‘one to one’ with?
The author who comes to mind is Corey Doctorow. I mostly like his science fiction and I resonate with his essays on modern technology. My main fear is that I would not be able to hold my own, and he would soon be bored. The only well-known author I have spoken to was Timothy Findley, and I do believe he was bored though too polite to say so. I once exchanged emails with Andy Weir, who somehow seemed like just a regular guy.
WHAT – What…

Here’s our stats breakdown for 2026.
According to the signup sheet we had 173 participants this year, although at least one of the Blaugust mentors clocked a handful of folks who did not officially sign up, which means that number is closer to 179.
Out of that first number, 161 bloggers made at least one post during August (that we could find!)
Of the bloggers who signed up 96 people indicated that this was their first time participating in Blaugust!!!
Disclaimer: The Blaugust crew are only huma…

Working throught some organizational stuff in JIRA at work. The level of nested items with Inititatives containing Epics and them containing Stories can be a little difficult to know the state of things. I have some ideas on how to flatten the reporting.
Practiced guitar a couple times.
Should have read through these classes earlier if for no other reason than getting the books ordered. Had to wait to get the reading done and then Thursday happened.

I was very circumspect during Blaugust. I didn't post about AI even once. Just a few ironic asides, here and there. It was tough, though. It's just so much more interesting to write about than most of the other options.
Here's the thing: putting to one side for the moment, if you can, all the appalling collateral damage the rush to dominate the AI space is causing - pollution, climate chaos, mass unemployment, wholesale theft of intellectual property, the imminent collapse of the global economy…

Blaugust 2026 is over. It wrapped up on Monday and here it is Saturday and I am finally summing up.
Blaugust 2026
I used to sum up very quickly after the event. But the gap has grown. Last year I didn’t sum up at all. I was too busy.
So how did Blaugust make me feel this year? Let me lay out a long winded foundation.
When you decide to collect something… beer cans, bottle caps, stamps, pilot’s wings, Hallmark Christmas ornaments, or whatever… the experience tends to go through a few distinct but…

The title of this post comes from the last line of Joseph Fasano's poem "For a Student Who Used AI to Write a Paper", but to me, it encompasses so much more than that.
For people have always yearned for an easier way—to fudge the numbers, or to outright cheat. At times, there's a valid strategy here. Many things in life are not worth putting 100% of your effort into, and knowing when to go all gas no brakes is sacred wisdom. There are people who work hard their entire lives and have nothing to s…

📚 Book 19 of 2026 - Finished (8/19): The Things We Never Say by Elizabeth Strout (4/5⭐)
I've been really careful about the books I choose to read lately since I'm still not in the right mental space to read anything too heavy. I'm not quite sure how I came upon this book, but I was wary that it might be another one added to my DNF list this year. Thankfully, that was not the case.
The Things We Never Say has got to be one of the most melancholic books I've read recently. There was just so much F…

A stressful week with a new Kindaichi novel, more Traitors, more P5 Tactica, some Fate/GO, and a jigsaw puzzle.
This was supposed to be something of a rest week, but it has mostly been spent stressing about jobs. I got a job offer for a test proctoring position with Pearson (as in, the publisher), but didn't like the vibes in the interview. I signed the contract anyway because I didn't have anything else and it would have expired in 48 hours.
Then I heard back from a manager of two Canada Post l…

Malvaltar mentioned in the comments the other day that the inaccessible part of the city of Hethereau, to the east of the river, had been redeveloped. It's a large area, easily as big as any of the existing districts, and it's been there since the game started but we've never been able to go there.
It supposedly can't be visited by NPCs either since the two bridges are closed, although only one is physically blocked to traffic. I guess an NPC could walk across even if none of them seem to be doi…
