Labour
I think there's a lot of gamers out there who could say they do some things due to a fandom. Whether it be commission work for art, guide writing for the public, cosplay, spreading the word about the game, etc, there's a point in time it could be called a labour of love. I've personally partaken in a few of these, such as game guide writing for the games I genuinely enjoy, convincing others to try games I've spent considerable time playing, and crafting. Both Warframe and Guild Wars 1 and…

I love the idea that literally anyone with a strong enough will can overcome anything. This idea is pushed outside of the realms of reality all the time in fiction and most famously through the trope of a knight slaying a dragon. The specific appeal of being a knight, even in modern day, has stuck around and it has absolutely nothing to do with nobility, wealth, or even duty. It’s all about power.
This idea exploded as an online meme about fantasy roleplaying when, in 2022, a trailer for The Eld…

This seems like an obligatory thing for someone who plays WoW frequently to write about, so I'm not going to fight the obligation. The list is shorter than you'd think for a nineteen-year player, but it has been obviously impacted by the recent addon apocalypse.
Baganator. Bags. This is the one I'd fight over. When you have as many characters as I do, the bag addon stops being a convenience and becomes infrastructure. One search box, everything I own, across every character and every bank tab. D…

War of the Spark was a rather underwhelming set for plenty of reasons. The introduction of non-Rare planeswalkers was cool, but was about it for what I found positive, with constant revisits to Ravnica becoming stale while the entire Nicol … Continue reading →

It was Michael's birthday the other day (happy belated birthday!). Inspired by their birthday wish, today's blog post is about an obscure game that is very dear to me: Heretic II.
Heretic II is a "wicked 3D action fantasy" that came out in 1998 developed by Raven Software. You might be thinking it's a sequel based on that "2" in the name, it's actually the fourth game in the Hexen/Heretic series, following the previous Serpent Riders trilogy games (Hexen, Hexen 2, and Heretic). I've only played…

RIFT is the one that showed up in 2011 looking like it might actually do it, actually be the game that gave WoW a real run, and then slowly, quietly, didn't. It's the saddest kind of MMO story to me. Not the ones that launch broken and deserve to fade. The ones that launch genuinely good, make you believe for a while, and run out of road anyway.
Let me tell you how good the launch actually was, because people forget. RIFT came out polished. Not "polished for a small studio," just polished. It ra…

Well, I stayed home from work today because I felt sick. I wasn't sure what I had, but I was pretty sure I picked up whatever-it-was from my boss last Thursday. He was hacking and sniffling, and my desk is near his. Friday I went and had a COVID shot, not because I was afraid of getting COVID, but because my oncologist suggested that I do so because there was a study saying cancer patients going through immunotherapy increased the effectiveness of the immunotherapy by getting one. Long story sho…

Today I went back to the Plane of Hate for a bit and proved to myself that I could solo the mini-bosses there, which felt amazing btw. I was so worried from the experience I had trying to solo Coercer T'vala at level 47. It was good to go back and get some vengeance.
It just feels so wrong from this angle . . . doesn't it?
Also, it was pretty great to get a fancy new Bloodmoon scythe from the Lord of Ire. I swapped that into my Primary hand pretty quick and went about my business of killing Plan…

Every Wednesday I meet up with a group at a local game store and play a couple hours of D&D. I'll be reposting this over on my D&D character blog, but when I do I'll also be adding an AI generated story board that coincides with the text. I made a comic book out of the first three months of play, and I'm considering doing the same with this next three months' worth of play.
Anyway, since I need to put something up for Blaugust, I thought I'd just post my character journal up here as well!
When y…

Strain
Now this is an interesting topic for discussion.
Overall, I never want to cause any kind of strain on my players. Real life is a thing, and I understand and respect the limitations it places on others. As for any game that I GM, player characters are definitely up for the various tests I put them through. I mean, what’s the point if you don’t test the limits of a fictional character? Obviously there are limits, but I’m not a GM who is out to TPK or punish my players.
As for my own TTRPG,…

Today we're going to divert yet again from the regular discussion of World of Warcraft, just like I have over the years with this blog.
Guild Wars 2 is the MMO I respect more than almost any other, and the one I keep at arm's length even though I've quietly poured a serious number of hours into it. That's the contradiction I want to be honest about. "Keep at arms length" makes it sound like I've barely touched the thing. I haven't. I've got a max-level character of every class in that game, beca…

I'm not quite halfway there, but I'm feeling pretty good about having posted every day so far. Continuing the theme of discussing the various expansions, today's topic is Legion.
Legion is the expansion that saved WoW for me, and I don't think that's an exaggeration. I came out of the Warlords drought about as close to done as I've ever been, logging in out of habit more than want, watching a garrison table like a guy checking a mailbox he knows is empty. Then Legion dropped, and within a week I…

Tact
I'll be honest right here and now: I lack this trait as a person. There are times where I understand that I should say or do something about a difficult situation, so I do my best at applying tact, but most of the time I think it comes across as awkward. This post isn't about that though. It should be about my lens as a game developer, developing my TTRPG.
One of my core rules at any table is to leave the other life behind. That probably sounds a little harsh, but it is essentially the same…

Before I jumped headfirst into EverQuest Legends, I had casually waded into an older game (crazy that a game made 5 years ago is "older") based on the Pathfinder game system. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous! It was on sale on Steam for $4.99 a month ago, and I had overheard a group of friends were delving into it.
"Group?" You say, "But I thought that was a single player only game!" You are correct, but they were going to play it together through the power of a Multiplayer Mod available throu…

Warlords of Draenor is the expansion I think about when someone tells me WoW can't disappoint me anymore. It started as strong as any expansion ever has, and then it just stopped, and the way it stopped taught me something about what I actually want out of this game.
The opening was genuinely great. The intro on the Tanaan Peninsula, blowing through the Dark Portal in reverse, the leveling zones through Draenor, all of it hit. The old orc warlords were a fun hook, the questing was tight, and for…

Top 10 lists are dumb and not often effective measurements of things that remain in motion, so I don’t give them much credit… But they’re also very fun and sometimes we could all do with taking things less seriously, and just enjoying things for what they are. To that end I have nailed down what my top 10 games currently are and a solid, hard-thought order for them to be ranked. I did, however, utilise one key rule:
I could not use multiple games from same franchise. So, if I wanted to put a Fal…

Resolve
I think this is probably one of the better prompts I've encountered so far for #RPGaDay2026. My resolve, as a game developer, finally kicked in late last year. I graduated with a Bachelor's in Game Design and Development back in 2016 and haven't really done anything with it since. Yesterday's post touched on part of the reason I decided to pursue this TTRPG, but it goes a bit further than that. I really want to make this game. It's been with me for over 16 years, and I genuinely want to…

Mists of Pandaria got laughed at before anyone had played a minute of it. Kung fu pandas. A whole expansion about kung fu pandas, plus a pet-battle system a lot of people immediately wrote off as WoW doing Pokémon. I remember the reaction to the announcement, and it was not kind. It also turned out to be one of my favorite expansions in the whole run, and I've never really backed off that.
The joke fell apart the second you actually got to Pandaria. The place was gorgeous. The Jade Forest, the V…

Orluf Wavebane and party rest in a safe alcove, guarded over by a statue of a legendary cleric.
Over the past year or so I’ve been trying to get more into tabletop roleplaying and I feel I’ve been pretty successful. I’ve had the urge to get back into it for many years, after some unsuccessful previous attempts from a while back. This new attempt started by my overhearing in the school pick-up line a couple of people talking about playing some D&D or something like it. The next time I went to pic…
