I’ve seen a half-dozen concerts at the Greek Theatre over the past 20 or so years, most recently last week. Every time the sound balance has been perfect, no matter what type of act is playing. Vocals, orchestras, electric guitars, all sound perfectly clear. Even the “obstructed view” seats way off to the side are still pretty good.
The scenery is beautiful. It’s outdoors, surrounded by the hills and trees of Griffith Park above Los Angeles. Depending on the season, it might already be dar…

This post is my contribution to the September 2026 IndieWeb Carnival topic "Parenting", hosted by winther:
https://winther.sysctl.dk/indieweb-carnival-september-2026-parenting/
My parents are good people, and I think about this often. About how lucky I am to have had a childhood free from abuse, trauma, or neglect. To have had an adolescence where I was encouraged, supported, and redirected towards interests and passions that have stayed with me into adulthood. In this life I have been blessed i…

It's the sixth of September already, somehow. Summer finally feels as though it's at an end, with the temperature outside right now a chilly +9C°, and the overcast sky a slate pewter with a biting wind. This is my absolute favourite kind of weather—no worries of sunburn and heatstroke. Of course, this is merely temporary, as we're going to reach a sunny high of +23C° on Wednesday. But for now, the chill is kind.
All the swaying leaves and foliage are still green—I can't help but question if they…

Indie Developer Simulator:
You have $99 and a dream. Your goal: publish an iOS app.
The dream is negotiable.
From the HTML source file:
Get rejected. Get reviewed. Get sherlocked.
You don’t need to be an Apple developer to “get” this, but if you are, steel yourself. This “simulation” hit me viscerally. Absolutely gutted. Yes, I laugh-cried my way through it, but the entire experience made me cringe in painful recognition. Years of helping developers fight past these types of rejections came floo…

Today at my local farmer’s market, one of my favorite stands had sliced raw yellow with red stripe beets out as samples. I hadn’t seen raw beets set out to sample raw before and I gave them a try. I was surprised by how nicely sweet they were with a little bit of beet “dirt” flavor. I found they are Badger Flame Beets | Fresh Harvest. I had never heard of Badger Flame Beets, but after tasting I picked up four or five. It seems like they would go well thinly sliced with a light olive oil and bals…

The first week back at work.
Happenings
So yeah, I started up back at work for the new school year. All the usual stuff to deal with. Updates to government policies to read. Leadership imploring all staff to do better. Chronic pain flares up with the stress. Still, I’m in a different classroom this year and it’s better than expected. My previous classroom had years (like, 10 years) of junk built up in old filing cabinets I never did get around to sorting out, so it was nice to come in to a relat…

Cat pics from the summer house
First post since Blaugust was over, pretty easy to fall out of established routine. Even though it also was my birthday this week, so I have an excuse. Probably last crazy week out of this visit home, summer is over, birthday season almost finished, just a couple of things left to sort out before travelling.
Monday was still Blaugust with my final posts. I did play more MMOs with Stars Reach and SpiritVale. Did play more Breathedge 2 right before it released in Ear…

BlizzCon 2026 will be arriving at the end of the week. On Saturday September 12th we’ll get the big keynote speech that will reveal the plans for the company for the next year or so.
BlizzCon 2026
It is too late to get tickets to be there in person. Those sold out ages ago.
Also, I will note that there are at least TWO aspects to the event to consider. There is the in-person event, which I know people who attend regularly enjoy. I’ve never been and it is unlikely I ever will, but the fact that t…

Thinking about music ahead of the music memories blog carnival and I need to exorcise these ear worms that are plaguing me.
The other week I watched Jurassic Park. It's still a great film. In part I thought to watch it because I heard the theme tune weeks earlier and the Jurassic Park theme is possibly my ultimate ear worm. Once it gets in it's there for weeks. So I thought I might as well watch the film and be singing it a few weeks more.
Last week we were away at my in-laws and did a forty-eig…

I’ve finished both of my “Summer Project” games, and am now at an impasse. I don’t know what I want to play now. I have options, an actual written backlog I want to tackle, but nothing speaks to me right now. And so I’m just kind of “floating”, waiting on something to strike.
This summer, my big project games were Final Fantasy VII, and Doom: The Dark Ages, and as of yesterday, they’re both completed. I could start FFVII Remake, or pick up Dark Ages Revelations, but I feel like I need a “cooldow…

First off, credit where credit is due. I pilfered the idea for this post from Mark Rogers who writes the Newsonaut blog. Apparently it’s a questionnaire that has been doing the rounds across various indie blogs for a while. However, it happens to ask some interesting questions about one’s reading habits. I read a book every month or so and I supplement this by listening to a lot of audiobooks. Yes, I’m aware they’re not the same thing entirely but both offer a means to consume and digest a book.…

We are back with some more actual video game releases here in week thirty-six.
Fantasy Critic League – Like Fantasy Football, but for Video Games
We had four titles lined up for release in the league this week. Surely somebody much have made out with that many titles in play. But first we have to stop and look at where we ended up last week on the scoreboard.
Week 35 Scores
First out of the gate was The Blood of Dawnwalker, a open world dark fantasy title.

For a little while I have been using YouTube way more, and even paid for the Lite subscription model, simply to test it out.
Honestly, it hasn’t been too bad, and I actually really, really enjoy a lot of the videos I’ve gotten through the algorithm.
But of course, YouTube Shorts have caught up with me and continue to be a very annoying problem, wasting seconds, minutes and hours of my time at every moment.
The algorithm does show some interesting things, or funny content I enjoy, but things go d…

Prettier is a JavaScript-based formatter that I use for this very site’s codebase, since it is quite extensible and can handle a wide variety of formats. I recently noticed a specific quirk with it where you need to specifically pre-format JSX in a certain way to get a specific output from it. With this source document and no formatting configured:

At the very beginning of August, I made a hasty and last-minute decision to participate in Blaugust 2026 [1], an indieweb community blogging event that encourages writers to develop their writing habits by posting more frequently. It's an entirely voluntary, honor system, no-stakes situation. Just a way to for those who are already interested in this stuff to absorb a little extra motivation from being part of a community effort.
In a recent post about answering song title questions, I touched o…

This was gonna be kind of a copout blog just to score one more post before the month ends, for reasons that will be explained at the end. However, the usual happened, so I have time to turn it into a bigger retrospective of how blogging's going.
Ambience, if you wish for one:
Publishing on an actual blog rather than posting through it on fedi/bluesky is a completely different feeling. I heard somewhere that you shouldn't tell others you're planning to do something difficult, because your brain w…

Hey There!
It's 7:32 AM EDT, 59°F, Humidity 74%, Wind 5 mph SE, clear
I'm not sure that temperature reading is accurate, because my thermometer reads 62°, but it it a chilly morning. I had to choose between going out on the porch or sitting in the study to write this morning. I chose the study, with the window open. A compromise.
Yesterday after morning routine and a walk, I spent the day experimenting with my new hearing aids. I'm having difficulty adjusting to them for two reasons. The first i…

I want to share a dumb little side note on specifically these posts. One, I often write them throughout the week, as I do things, so I don’t forget. Sometimes they probably feel a bit disjointed for that, but I try to keep a flow. Second, when I write in Joplin, everything gets a date. Either the date written, or the date it gets published on the blog. Like I may write a review without a date, but once its scheduled, I add a date. Its sort of a way to keep track of if I need to push something to…

I made pancakes this morning and it took almost two hours. The first few were really bad but I got the hang of it eventually. The key step is flipping the pancake with confidence. Olive oil helped too, more than butter or bacon fat.

WHO – An author you would love to have a ‘one to one’ with?
The author who comes to mind is Corey Doctorow. I mostly like his science fiction and I resonate with his essays on modern technology. My main fear is that I would not be able to hold my own, and he would soon be bored. The only well-known author I have spoken to was Timothy Findley, and I do believe he was bored though too polite to say so. I once exchanged emails with Andy Weir, who somehow seemed like just a regular guy.
WHAT – What…

Working throught some organizational stuff in JIRA at work. The level of nested items with Inititatives containing Epics and them containing Stories can be a little difficult to know the state of things. I have some ideas on how to flatten the reporting.
Practiced guitar a couple times.
Should have read through these classes earlier if for no other reason than getting the books ordered. Had to wait to get the reading done and then Thursday happened.
