Today at my local farmer’s market, one of my favorite stands had sliced raw yellow with red stripe beets out as samples. I hadn’t seen raw beets set out to sample raw before and I gave them a try. I was surprised by how nicely sweet they were with a little bit of beet “dirt” flavor. I found they are Badger Flame Beets | Fresh Harvest. I made pancakes this morning and it took almost two hours. The first few were really bad but I got the hang of it eventually. The key step is flipping the pancake with confidence. Olive oil helped too, more than butter or bacon fat.

Just a quick post today to say that we're celebrating our girl's second birthday!
She started her morning by going to the dog park, where she saw her friends and played fetch to her heart's content. Danny stopped by a coffee shop on the way home, where she got a pup cup with a treat. After arriving home, she's had plenty of cuddles and more playtime.

A couple days ago I made stirfry, and I used red tomatoes, orange carrots, yellow squash and yellow beans, green squash and green beans and green celery, and some things that were basically white and brown. Too bad there's no food that's truly blue, and that I didn't have some purple cabbage as well.
Tomatoes, squashes, and hot peppers are all from someone's garden (not necessarily mine). Yellow beans from the local farmstand.

A while back, Ava wrote a post that I enjoyed (as always), but at times offered a perspective that didn't entirely sit right with me. Ava's issue of concern is a lack of precision around labeling, using "vegan", "almost vegan" and "basically vegan" as examples.

I love baked ziti. Growing up in Connecticut every event called for a baked ziti. It is the east coast equivalent of the midwestern hot dish. Your neighbors invited you to a backyard barbecue? You can count on a tinfoil tray of ziti next to the burgers. Going to a pot-luck with your coworkers?
