  1. pico.sh!

Wow, pico.sh looks very enticing. I found it last night after reading Brennan’s post, Free Speech and the IndieWeb, which discusses the reasons he doesn’t use Cloudflare. See also his longer post on this topic. I have been feeling a little dirty about using Cloudflare for hosting this little indie blog. Plus, Cloudflare frustrated me this week when it wouldn’t update my broken site (my fault for breaking it; Cloudflare’s for not letting me fix it). So Brennan’s post provoked me to look for alter…

  2. Ultimate Glossary of Kruk and Kuip’s Greatest Sayings

Following up on yesterday’s pine-grabbing, if you’re unfamiliar with Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper’s colorful and unique baseball vernacular, Grant Brisbee’s 2023 “ultimate glossary” of the duo’s “greatest sayings” in The Athletic is a fun read. (I’ll admit up front: these lose a lot in written form. You really need to experience them during a game to appreciate them fully.)

  3. Links to Other Blaugust Posts

Morning! This is going to be an easy one, because it’s just links to other Blaugust posts I’ve been collecting. I’m off to a brain MRI appointment this morning and then throwing away a mattress and sofa, which was supposed to be yesterday but plans changed, and then somehow squeezing in time for the day job. Blaugust Reading You may or may not be aware that it’s almost impossible to actually read the posts blasting by at a thousand miles an hour during Blaugust, let alone interact with them in a…

  4. Apple Briefly Removes Telegram from App Store for Hosting CSAM—Telegram CEO Claims Extortion

    JAG’s Workshop [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-05 00:24 UTC·Jason Anthony Guy·best 0.87 · details

Emma Roth, writing for The Verge: Telegram CEO Pavel Durov blames an extortionist for planting child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in a public chat to get the app temporarily removed from Apple’s App Store on Monday night. “Apple removed Telegram from the App Store before contacting us,” Durov says in a post on X. “This creates a potential systemic risk for every mobile app that hosts user-generated content. If an app used by more than a billion people can be removed from the App Store without pr…

  5. Are we becoming too paranoid about AI slop?

    82MHz [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-04 00:00 UTC·best 0.87 · details

Recently a person I'm following on Mastodon posted a picture of two cats. It was cute and kind of funny. I saw it, chuckled and forgot about it. But then someone replied that they ran the picture through an AI checker and according to this the picture was very likely AI generated. So the original poster apologised for not checking whether or not the picture was AI generated slop and to make up for their blunder, posted a different cat picture that wasn't AI generated (hopefully). A similar thing…

  6. In a Game of Marketing One-Upmanship, Anthropic’s Claude Hacks Three Sites

    JAG’s Workshop [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-03 03:40 UTC·Jason Anthony Guy·best 0.96 · details

Anthropic, this past Thursday, following OpenAI’s admission that ChatGPT hacked HuggingFace: In response to this incident, we began a large-scale retrospective review of our own cybersecurity evaluations. In particular, we looked for evidence that Claude—like the OpenAI models that accessed Hugging Face—was able to access the internet from within testing environments that should have been sealed off. After reviewing 141,006 evaluation runs where Claude could have obtained internet access, we ide…
