  1. Bear Blog Challenge

Questions belong to Ava’s Space Why did you make the blog in the first place? Because I wanted to share my thoughts somewhere. I lurked this site for some time before starting my own blog. People’s thoughts on the smaller internet and breaking away from large platforms resonated with me. I also remember finding a couple of artists discussing art topics on the feed, that inspired me the most. Why did you choose Bearblog? Because of the community! It feels sincere and is active daily. I read throu…

(This is my seventh post in a series of entries I’m using to participate in Blaugust for 2026.) You may have noticed that each of my Blaugust posts is hung on a hook that is another article (sometimes several), sometimes only loosely related to my topic. I’m liking the idea of using these as jumping off points, and the whole thing feels far less derivative than the “articles” I’ve frequently found in the past that were “Here’s a video with a paragraph about it that hits word count but really jus…

  3. Owning media again

Owning media again This year, one of my aspirations is to rely less on the big streaming services for my entertainment. Why? Well, for one thing, if we give too much power to large corporations by getting overly attached to their services, that leads to monopolies, inequality and ultimately, democratic decline. How’s that for a positive opening? Finding alternatives is easier said than done, because Tech Morality is Hard, and I would generalise that to “Corporate Morality is Hard”. Namely, keepi…

As I mentioned, I accidentally published all my draft posts. You know, the ones I cheekily listed at the bottom of my ripgrep post. All public and in my RSS feed. Dangit. What happened I can’t know for sure, but here’s what I suspect happened. Sloppiness on my part When Hugo builds my production site, it puts the files in the public/ subdirectory. On the Blaugust Discord, UltrViolet suggested that bloggers link their post titles to the permalinks so that it’s easy to just right-click, “Copy Link as Markdown,” and get a formatted link with the correct title. (I’ve noticed Orion includes this in its context menu, and there are extensions for Firefox and Chrome that add it.) I’ve been using the publication date in the post footer as the permalink on all the 11ty-generated parts of my site since I first converted the Les Mis blog back in 2021…

I’m not sure I’ve ever noticed or used that. I didn’t find any mentions of people actually using it that way. Mostly I found secondhand references to other references to the HTML spec (yes, it’s official!), which has this clear as mud description: The bookmark keyword may be used with a and area elements. I've spent today reading through a blaugust 2026 RSS feed that I imported courtesy of 82MHz. Thank you! I discovered today that my blog post from yesterday didn't post automatically to my Mastodon account—which I assumed was due to an error made. But instead, I found out that Robb Knight's EchoFeed is shutting down. The reasons he lists for discontinuing the service make a lot of sense, but it still makes me sad. Not because of the service I'm losing, but because EchoFeed was one of the first IndieWeb projects I came across after joining omg.lol, and it has always worked effortlessly for me. There…

The main tool I use for to write this blog is vim (specifically Neovim. “Vim” at this point is not really a particular program, but a clade of software.) I have been using it for many years now, so this is not surprising. What is surprising (to me) is that I do not write (or at least draft) more posts by hand. I like writing by hand. It's currently Blaugust, and so I'm counting all my blog posts this month as Blaugust posts, including the Linkdumps. I told a friend about it and she laughed, because "blau" in German means "blue", like the colour, but it can also mean being drunk. And I had this thought too... Blaugust sounds a bit like I'm planning to spend the month getting hammered. Sometimes a totally innocent or meaningless word in one language can mean something entirely different in another language. I'm always reminded…

This game of mine has been with me since 2010, and it has slowly grown and evolved over the past 16 years. Only this year did I decide to actually put more effort into making it a reality, and I think I decided a little too late. The Z323 said goodbye It all started last Wednesday. I wanted to listen to some lo-fi music while coding. I turned on my speakers, and nothing happened. I tried turning them off and on again: nothing. I even plugged them into another wall socket, but the LED stayed dark. It came as a surprise. I had that 2.1 speaker system for 15 years and never had any problems with it. It also never showed any signs of issues before it broke. It was a Logitech Z323. The first movie I watched with it was The Fe…

The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners collab in Wuthering Waves has been over for a while now, but despite it having been pretty much my sole reason for picking up the game in the first place I’m still playing every day. Which is to say, it’s fricking awesome as a whole! To some extent that really doesn’t surprise me of course, as I’ve heard a lot of good things about it since its release two years ago. What does surprise me, however, is that some of the features I’d expected to like the least are the ones…

It is far too easy in these modern times to ignore or even believe that good things are coming. And it’s also easy to dismiss excitement at upcoming games as dismissive of the wider global horrors; some temporary panacea that just delays the drop into the void. I feel differently. I have always maintained that being excited for new things in gaming is a wonderful feeling, and one that I’m very often swept up in, particularly when it comes to MMOs. Where EA is going now is clearly tragic: a lot of great developers and teams will be harmed in the impending bloodbath as the Saudis…

Sure, I like electronic gadgets. But I dislike planned obsolescence more. It’s one thing when the newer model really is that much better. “All About the Pentiums” exaggerated it, but computer hardware in the 1990s really was improving by leaps and bounds. (And the software was devouring those performance gains, both in demanding more resources, and being less efficient as programmers were told to optimize for their own time, not for disk space or RAM.) That eventually settled out around the time…

  45. Five Interesting Indie Platforms You Might Not Have Heard Of

It's already been almost a month (how??) since I deleted all my corporate social media accounts. Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, Discord, among others. And as a result I've found myself looking at other social platforms and communities to fill my time with. Because social media is not inherently bad—it only starts becoming bad when multi-billion dollar businesses are created around using people as products and extracting as much information and value as possible out of every single one of them. Now…

… About the increased frequency of posting in the past few days, I have been infected by an Internet meme. On mastodon somebody posted something about #Blaugust, where there is some "competition" to post at least once a day during August. Like NaNoWriMo, only much smaller. Since I happened to have posted something on August 1, I signed up and so far I have been posting every day. I might not have bothered you all with the garden report, but the others I feel like I probably would've wanted to bl…

i hate typing on my phone. it's so slow. it takes forever to get my thoughts out. and i'm still very prone to typos which only adds to the time it takes. (yes, i am typing this blog post on my phone) i don't have a keyboard with autocorrect anymore. ever since i swapped over to grapheneos, i started looking at keyboard alternatives. I used to really like typing with the swipe option. It was really fast! but i would also prefer to not give microsoft or google my data. i didn't like the stock grap…

Python A-Z is a blog series about Python. Each day, I share insights, ideas and examples for different parts of Python development that match with the letter of the day. Blaugust is an annual blogging festival in August where the goal is to write a blog post every day of the month. The code that a program runs is provided by the developer of the program. The inputs and interactions are initiated by the user of the program. The environment variables are data provided by the system that runs it. T…

Here’s a good post and tips from Mike Harley: How I make my blog posts more resilient. Mike recommends self-hosting media. I’ve been back and forth about doing that vs. using something like Cloudinary or Cloudflare. I think Mike makes a good point, and I’ll keep the images in my blog repo. Mike also puts permalinks in his posts proactively (excuse the accidental alliteration) so they stay consistent across platforms. Smart. ... Read the full post on Sal's
