(This is one of a series of entries I’m using to participate in Blaugust for 2026.) Remember when you would buy a compact camera if you wanted something inexpensive? Well, technically you still can (Looking at you, Camp Snap!), but the prices for higher quality compact cameras are surpassing the lower end DSLR and mirrorless models, even when you factor in the lenses. Granted, you’re getting what you pay for. A $1k+ compact is going to outperform my current, aging DSLR (in the best lighting, at…

I mentioned that I was going to try following Neal Stephenson’s advice and learn to write in cursive. I stuck with it for almost a whole afternoon. Is that good? Practicing proper cursive — in my case, as directed by the Palmer Method — massively slowed down my writing. And the product looked like shit because I was bad at it. Then I realized the Palmer Method opens the rabbit hole of “whole arm movement,” where you use your arm to move the pen rather than your hand. Apparently this can take yea…

I’ve been muddling through ways to stay interesting – to myself and friends – in the age of AI. Part of the answer, I have come to understand, is the construction of Thickets. Dreaming up such a thing without a way to traverse it kept the idea incomplete. One nagging thought was that it was important to get properly lost – as opposed to trivially lost. That feeling where you had a good sense of where you were, but a question you asked or a connection you made has left you in unfamiliar territory…

This is the start of a new series on my blog that I tentatively call "hitting the digital brakes". If I come up with a better title, I'll change this header and the hashtag This is a picture I took on the road home today, with a Kodak Charmera. The Charmera is a tiny keychain camera that I bring with me when I use a small handbag. I love my tiny camera. There's no logic to the love for it, the camera has a very low resolution and it's so tiny it's kinda hard to take pictures with it using the sc…

    JAG’s Workshop [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-01 20:17 UTC·Jason Anthony Guy·best 0.99 · details

Carl E. Martin, in his first video on YouTube: All music, and especially popular music, is created through inspiration and copying. ‘The Gen Alpha Melody’ is an interesting example where a specific melody is being used in hundreds of different contexts. That description undersells this video. It’s a fascinating exploration of a pop music melody so ubiquitous it’s practically a cliché. It has a killer opening, and I thoroughly enjoyed Martin’s deadpan, no-nonsense delivery (and his bone-dry sense…

When I first decided I would post about memories and music it was natural to think back to the earliest memory I had. I guess I can remember my mother singing the Itsy Bitsy Spider or some other nursery rhyme. But for a "regular" song? I believe that would have to be Boot Scootin' Boogie by Brooks & Dunn My dad used to listen to country music back in the day. He had a bunch of cassette tapes for songs he recorded off the radio and the master list of the songs on each tape in a notebook. He also…

Cry "Havoc!" and let slip the dogs of Blaugust! Or is that too aggressive? How about Blaugust, come she will? No, I think I might have used that one before. After a while it gets hard to remember. But here we are again. And how many of us are there this time? Let me see if I can find the list. You'll have to excuse me a moment. It's the final day of July, and I'm in a contemplative mood. Tomorrow begins Blaugust 2026, a fun event where bloggers are challenged to write 31 blog posts in 31 days. Will I participate? Well, every month has been Blaugust for me since November 2025, as I've written at least 23 posts every month since then. Although I haven't yet had a month where I've successfully blogged every single day, so maybe I will. What I want to talk about, though, is not blogging. At the start of the month, Dan Q. w…
