Morning!
This is going to be an easy one, because it’s just links to other Blaugust posts I’ve been collecting.
I’m off to a brain MRI appointment this morning and then throwing away a mattress and sofa, which was supposed to be yesterday but plans changed, and then somehow squeezing in time for the day job.
Blaugust Reading
You may or may not be aware that it’s almost impossible to actually read the posts blasting by at a thousand miles an hour during Blaugust, let alone interact with them in a…

During the month of August I will be participating in Blaugust, a month long blogging challenge.
Today’s TDC asks us to:
Place the word Madagascar somewhere in the response in a way that makes no sense
As I web searched for Madagascar I noticed that images of lemurs featured heavily in the results, and that gave me an idea for a twist. I stole an image from this web page and edited it slightly. I am sure nobody will notice that I added a little cat to it.

This is a Blaugust 2026 blog post.
Next month I will celebrate my second anniversary of moving to Portland, Oregon. I’m so happy to be here.
I celebrated my first anniversary nearly a year ago with a series of Mastodon social media posts, one a day, each with a photo (or two) of something I loved about my new neighborhood. I posted them under the #pdxOneYear hashtag.
These memories deserve to be immortalized in something less ephemeral than a series of social media posts.
So, I’ve compiled them…

It's already been almost a month (how??) since I deleted all my corporate social media accounts. Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, Discord, among others. And as a result I've found myself looking at other social platforms and communities to fill my time with.
Because social media is not inherently bad—it only starts becoming bad when multi-billion dollar businesses are created around using people as products and extracting as much information and value as possible out of every single one of them.

Here’s a good post and tips from Mike Harley: How I make my blog posts more resilient.
Mike recommends self-hosting media. I’ve been back and forth about doing that vs. using something like Cloudinary or Cloudflare. I think Mike makes a good point, and I’ll keep the images in my blog repo.
Mike also puts permalinks in his posts proactively (excuse the accidental alliteration) so they stay consistent across platforms. Smart.

I have spent just over a decade on Git Hub. I’m a hobbyist. Very little if anything I’ve had on there has been of benefit to anyone other than myself. Microsoft’s acquisition of GitHub in 2019 did not pass me by. I turned a blind eye. I think it’s fair to say my patronage is of no benefit to Microsoft.
Since spring 2025 I’ve used Git Hub to host and publish my Hugo blog. I’m getting something for nothing. That sits well with me since it’s Microsoft. It still feels a bit off though since I’m the…

You know those moments where you think, dang, computers are so insanely fast now … so why in the world does software still feel slow??
Well ripgrep is the antidote to that feeling. It’s just mind-bogglingly fast. I flippin’ love ripgrep. I use it for so much stuff.
Anyway, today I found a nice snippet that lists all my blog posts that are still in draft status:

I recently completed importing a backup of some of my old blog posts. These posts were from 2012 - 2019 and required a fair bit of editing because I was using embeds from other sites, some of which have since been purchased and shut down.

Why bother having a blog if you’re not going to do the writing yourself? The entire point of blogging is to express yourself. That doesn’t happen if Chatty Jeeps does the work for you.

But if AI can be helpful for things like blog production. I know, for example, that blog posts with an image are several times more likely to attract someone’s attention than one without an image. I can't say I had any plans to do the Community Builder thing for Blaugust this year. The very fact that I'm calling it "the Community Builder thing" suggests a distinct lack of empathy with the concept. Emphasis on "enough". Just enough. Not more.
