Questions belong to Ava’s Space
Why did you make the blog in the first place?
Because I wanted to share my thoughts somewhere. I lurked this site for some time before starting my own blog. People’s thoughts on the smaller internet and breaking away from large platforms resonated with me. I also remember finding a couple of artists discussing art topics on the feed, that inspired me the most.
Why did you choose Bearblog?
Because of the community! It feels sincere and is active daily. I read throu…

Richard Adams’ Watership Down (New York: Macmillan, 1972) is one of the classic works of xenofiction (the fiction set in strange cultures, real or imagined), placed as it is among and between the warrens of rabbits in the English countryside. Lapine, the language he sketches for his rabbits, is arguably the best naming language ever created, and is a minimalist virtuoso performance, a haiku of a language compared to the sonnet of Sindarin.
The following documentation of the language is derived f…

(This is my seventh post in a series of entries I’m using to participate in Blaugust for 2026.)
You may have noticed that each of my Blaugust posts is hung on a hook that is another article (sometimes several), sometimes only loosely related to my topic.
I’m liking the idea of using these as jumping off points, and the whole thing feels far less derivative than the “articles” I’ve frequently found in the past that were “Here’s a video with a paragraph about it that hits word count but really jus…

Owning media again
This year, one of my aspirations is to rely less on the big streaming services for my entertainment. Why? Well, for one thing, if we give too much power to large corporations by getting overly attached to their services, that leads to monopolies, inequality and ultimately, democratic decline. How’s that for a positive opening?
Finding alternatives is easier said than done, because Tech Morality is Hard, and I would generalise that to “Corporate Morality is Hard”. Namely, keepi…

As I mentioned, I accidentally published all my draft posts. You know, the ones I cheekily listed at the bottom of my ripgrep post. All public and in my RSS feed. Dangit.
What happened
I can’t know for sure, but here’s what I suspect happened.
Sloppiness on my part
When Hugo builds my production site, it puts the files in the public/ subdirectory. I then upload that subdir to Cloudflare Pages with wrangler.

On the Blaugust Discord, UltrViolet suggested that bloggers link their post titles to the permalinks so that it’s easy to just right-click, “Copy Link as Markdown,” and get a formatted link with the correct title. (I’ve noticed Orion includes this in its context menu, and there are extensions for Firefox and Chrome that add it.)
I’ve been using the publication date in the post footer as the permalink on all the 11ty-generated parts of my site since I first converted the Les Mis blog back in 2021…

While looking for linking conventions regarding permalink locations, I found a reference on Wikipedia to <a rel="bookmark" href="..."> being used for permalinks. I’m not sure I’ve ever noticed or used that. I didn’t find any mentions of people actually using it that way.
Mostly I found secondhand references to other references to the HTML spec (yes, it’s official!), which has this clear as mud description:

I've spent today reading through a blaugust 2026 RSS feed that I imported courtesy of 82MHz. Thank you! It's been really nice to have all the blogs in one place in my RSS reader and has pushed me to make a point of reading even more of folk's blog posts. Very fun. I'm also trying to make a point to email people more this month. It makes my day when someone emails me about my blog posts (you mean people read these?) so I hope to make someone else's day in the same way.
I've spent the rest of the…

I discovered today that my blog post from yesterday didn't post automatically to my Mastodon account—which I assumed was due to an error made. But instead, I found out that Robb Knight's EchoFeed is shutting down.
The reasons he lists for discontinuing the service make a lot of sense, but it still makes me sad. Not because of the service I'm losing, but because EchoFeed was one of the first IndieWeb projects I came across after joining omg.lol, and it has always worked effortlessly for me. There…

The main tool I use for to write this blog is vim (specifically Neovim. “Vim” at this point is not really a particular program, but a clade of software.) I have been using it for many years now, so this is not surprising.
What is surprising (to me) is that I do not write (or at least draft) more posts by hand. I like writing by hand. I have quite a collection of analog writing instruments and I certainly am looking for ways to justify that. I have fountain pens, I have typewriters, I have far to…

It's currently Blaugust, and so I'm counting all my blog posts this month as Blaugust posts, including the Linkdumps. Blaugust sounds a bit like I'm planning to spend the month getting hammered. Reach
Reach is something I'm sure all game developers want for their passion project. I'm no different. This game of mine has been with me since 2010, and it has slowly grown and evolved over the past 16 years. Only this year did I decide to actually put more effort into making it a reality, and I think I decided a little too late.
A few prompt entries back, the word was Charm, and I mentioned that I lack that — this ties into the same idea. To reach others, a developer needs some sort of networ…

A decade ago I wrote a post about blogrolls and the practical and social issues surrounding them. At the time, the version of Squarespace I was using didn’t easily support such things or at least wasn’t able to do so in a manner I liked, so I didn’t have one. Ten years later Squarespace as a hosting platform has far greater functionality, hence I recently decided to add a blogroll. That was in March this year. Wilhelm over at The Ancient Gaming Noob posted about the sad state of affairs at the modern incarnation of Electronic Arts. What EA has become over the past thirty years is both sad and despicable: they are often times more damaging to gaming and the industry than they are beneficial. And now the stage is set, as Wilhelm describes, for things to become much worse.
Where EA is going now is clearly tragic: a lot of great developers and teams will be harmed in the impending bloodbath as the Saudis…

If there’s one game that perfectly encapsulates the rebellious spirit of the Dreamcast, it’s Jet Set Radio. It’s a colorful, high-octane game where you play as a gang of rollerblading graffiti artists tagging local landmarks to strike back at the cops, a mega-corporation and even the military. The premise is silly, but the gameplay is fun and the vibes are immaculate.

Cataclysm is the expansion that took the world I'd spent a few years in and rearranged the furniture while I was out of the room. Every MMORPG has to have it, for reasons that I find hard to imagine. Is it such a universal pastime? Sure, I like electronic gadgets. But I dislike planned obsolescence more.
It’s one thing when the newer model really is that much better. “All About the Pentiums” exaggerated it, but computer hardware in the 1990s really was improving by leaps and bounds. (And the software was devouring those performance gains, both in demanding more resources, and being less efficient as programmers were told to optimize for their own time, not for disk space or RAM.) That eventually settled out around the time…
