  1. Blaugust – Embrace the Hater Within You?

    The Ancient Gaming Noob [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-08 18:15 UTC·Wilhelm Arcturus·best 0.94 · details

The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference –Elie Wiesel Last week the site Aftermath, had what they called Hater Week, where the staff opened up on things they did not like. There were some interesting takes. Aftermath Hater Week – I totally stole this image Some of them I felt in my bones, like the one about how awful Adobe is. I remember having a beta copy of Photoshop 2.0 back in 1991 and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I am not even a creative by profession, but everybody I…

  2. Do I Miss Travels When I’m Back Home for Months?

Three of these are mine with setup and other stuff Was supposed to be catching up, but ended up missing a couple of days instead, downside of being back home compared to travels – too much stuff that affects my plans out of my control. Even though most of my travels I’m not solo (sadly, mostly financial reasons), but it’s still just one person usually and it’s easier to discuss plans, besides I’m the one planning stuff mostly since travels are also my stream content. That was one of the reasons…

    Lyons in Beta [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-08 17:53 UTC·best 0.84 · details

I learned quite recently that August 8[1] is HTML Day, a celebration of HTML that includes actual meetups! It almost feels like a silly thing to celebrate when I think back to my teenage self building fan sites in notepad.exe, but in reality it's quite impowering to be able to craft something with one's own (digital) hands. I know most people, especiailly people who grew up with social media, don't understand how incredily accessible HTML and CSS (and even basic JavaScript) are! It would probabl…

We have a lot of stuff. And I mean a lot. We live in a rather large house with a lot of storage space and over the years, particularly since the children all moved out, we've filled most of it up. So, now we're vaguely thinking about moving to somewhere smaller and more manageable for our twilight years, we're going to have to do something about that. And since it's going to be a long job, even though it's very unlikely we'll be going anywhere for a couple of years, I've already started on my ha…

Mists of Pandaria got laughed at before anyone had played a minute of it. Kung fu pandas. A whole expansion about kung fu pandas, plus a pet-battle system a lot of people immediately wrote off as WoW doing Pokémon. I remember the reaction to the announcement, and it was not kind. It also turned out to be one of my favorite expansions in the whole run, and I've never really backed off that. The joke fell apart the second you actually got to Pandaria. The place was gorgeous. It is a Saturday morning and I 100% do not feel like writing a blog post, and in fact, largely feel like I’m “over” the rush of renewed blogging energy that Blaugust brings every year and I’m ready to move on to another project. But alas, there are some 24 posts yet to be written. The “staying motivated” Blaugust topic week should be in the second week, not the last. This is the dual-edged sword of writing challenges. It snuck up on me all of a sudden, but it’s starting to look like Autumn where I live. Leaves starting to fall, the light of the sun looks different, it feels like Summer is quickly coming to its end. I made a drive across the river into Kentucky this evening, and the whole way it either looked like late-September, or mid-October depending on if the rain had caught up to me or not. On the one hand, one step closer to the heat being gone, but on the other, where’s the time gone? It might be the l…

However, it struck a chord with me since some of this stuff I have never fully moved away from or have still got tucked away in a draw somewhere until I am minded to have a play or finally get rid of it in one way or another. Going back to just after I graduated grad school, when I started writing poetry (as I had time to think a little more freely), I started keeping phases and snippets. Some were in notebooks and some in text notes on my computer. Often these were things that would pop to mind and wouldn’t clear my head until I captured them. Some turned into poems (a sliver of what I wrote is on my Poetry :: vanderwal.net page). Some turned into short stories that picked up a few of the phrases and snippets, some…

It's a post about a limited-time event in a game that, by my count, two people who follow this blog might be playing. And all the event involves is fishing. It's not proper fishing, either. Not even by the standards of the game itself, which aren't exactly rigorous to begin with. Yesterday my work was rather entertaining. A workmate went on vacation for today and tomorrow, and there were a few tasks I had to do on their stead. This was nothing unusual, he covers for me plenty as well. However, I do wish things had allowed for at least a bit more time to write a post. I did have a relatively easy idea which was a quick draft before my actual post of the day. So, here’s a list of things I still do as a young adult that most of society expects me to stop doing, or something…

I do not do any Phoneblogging. Zero. None. Zilch. The closest I get is reading my RSS reader and saving posts to a blog ideas list. As I get older, I just don't want to mess with my phone for in-depth things, and blogging, for me, qualifies as something in depth. I scroll Mastodon, I scroll my RSS reader, I get Home Assistant alerts, and I scroll Instagram reels for fun. That's pretty much the only things I use my phone for. Oh, I guess I use it to ask Rachelle questions when I'm grocery shoppin…

Following along with tutorials can scratch that itch, and teach me some neat techniques.

Morning! This is going to be an easy one, because it’s just links to other Blaugust posts I’ve been collecting. I’m off to a brain MRI appointment this morning and then throwing away a mattress and sofa, which was supposed to be yesterday but plans changed, and then somehow squeezing in time for the day job. Blaugust Reading You may or may not be aware that it’s almost impossible to actually read the posts blasting by at a thousand miles an hour during Blaugust, let alone interact with them in a…

This is an analysis of the Furbish of the first-generation Furby toys. I haven’t kept up with the language in the ensuing four generations (!) of toys. Introduction This web page is devoted to documenting and analyzing the Furbish language. Furbish and the Furby were invented by Dave Hampton, founder of Sounds Amazing (a games company) and a former Mattel programmer. Inspired by the success of Tamagotchis and Giga Pets, he decided to create a new kind of virtual pet, a completely interactive ani…

I'm editing blog posts to add to my digital garden, and just found these doodles in a post from 2014. Why did I ever stop making them? They are so joyful! Here is the story about them: back then, I was on bed rest for a while because I fell and hurt my knee, and I used that time to be insanely creative. One of the things I played together was a series of doodles I titled "Lessons from my Bear". I used one of my bears as model for these wonky little drawings. He is an old bear, had him since I wa…

i hate typing on my phone. it's so slow. it takes forever to get my thoughts out. and i'm still very prone to typos which only adds to the time it takes. (yes, i am typing this blog post on my phone) i don't have a keyboard with autocorrect anymore. ever since i swapped over to grapheneos, i started looking at keyboard alternatives. I used to really like typing with the swipe option. It was really fast! but i would also prefer to not give microsoft or google my data. i didn't like the stock grap…

I have spent just over a decade on Git Hub. I’m a hobbyist. Very little if anything I’ve had on there has been of benefit to anyone other than myself. Microsoft’s acquisition of GitHub in 2019 did not pass me by. I turned a blind eye. I think it’s fair to say my patronage is of no benefit to Microsoft. Since spring 2025 I’ve used Git Hub to host and publish my Hugo blog. I’m getting something for nothing. That sits well with me since it’s Microsoft. It still feels a bit off though since I’m the…
