  1. Blaugust – Embrace the Hater Within You?

    The Ancient Gaming Noob [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-08 18:15 UTC·Wilhelm Arcturus·best 0.96 · details

The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference –Elie Wiesel Last week the site Aftermath, had what they called Hater Week, where the staff opened up on things they did not like. There were some interesting takes. Aftermath Hater Week – I totally stole this image Some of them I felt in my bones, like the one about how awful Adobe is. I remember having a beta copy of Photoshop 2.0 back in 1991 and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I am not even a creative by profession, but everybody I…

AuguStory, the story of your blog by Robert Birming encourages sharing the story of our blog. Chloe at For No One has put together some great additional prompts and I've enjoyed stories by Sylvia and Becky at Online Goddess. My blogging story is not that interesting - while I've been banging around making sites since 1999 I've not consistently had a blog. Different projects have come and gone. Personal blogs, politics, local stuff, TV shows, a game, courses I was doing, on Diaryland, Blogger, Wo…

  3. HTML Day

    Lyons in Beta [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-08 17:53 UTC·best 0.98 · details

I learned quite recently that August 8[1] is HTML Day, a celebration of HTML that includes actual meetups! It almost feels like a silly thing to celebrate when I think back to my teenage self building fan sites in notepad.exe, but in reality it's quite impowering to be able to craft something with one's own (digital) hands. I know most people, especiailly people who grew up with social media, don't understand how incredily accessible HTML and CSS (and even basic JavaScript) are! It would probabl…

A-ha, I have found the official Blaugust 2026 prompts! This week's topic is "Introduce Yourself," so I'll go ahead and do just that. I'm only covering some of the questions in this post. Inventory Full [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-08 16:39 UTC·Bhagpuss·best 0.81 · details

We have a lot of stuff. And I mean a lot. We live in a rather large house with a lot of storage space and over the years, particularly since the children all moved out, we've filled most of it up. So, now we're vaguely thinking about moving to somewhere smaller and more manageable for our twilight years, we're going to have to do something about that. And since it's going to be a long job, even though it's very unlikely we'll be going anywhere for a couple of years, I've already started on my ha…

If you couldn’t find yesterday’s post, that was my fault. I put the wrong time in the published date. I didn’t realize it until after I woke up. Yesterday I thought I had spammed the discovery feed after multiple posting attempts. I had originally written about the pancake breakfast I made. I wasn’t able to find it on the top of recents, so I disregarded the draft. Then I answered the Bear blog questions from Ava after reading Peige’s (aka Pretend Typewriter) own answers. Wow, pico.sh looks very enticing. I found it last night after reading Brennan’s post, Free Speech and the IndieWeb, which discusses the reasons he doesn’t use Cloudflare. See also his longer post on this topic. I have been feeling a little dirty about using Cloudflare for hosting this little indie blog. Plus, Cloudflare frustrated me this week when it wouldn’t update my broken site (my fault for breaking it; Cloudflare’s for not letting me fix it). So Brennan’s post provoked me to look for alter…

It is enough for this moment to say that game is very different than it was back at launch in 2016. Still, it has been a pretty amazing and occasionally unlikely journey, these last ten years. Immersion is extremely important to me as a story-focused player in FFXIV. And while I generally enjoy the story beats of the game (ignoring some of the lesser engaging stuff in Dawntrail), I do have one small issue with how FFXIV handles the main character of the MSQ… because if you aren’t playing a Warrior of Light (WoL), then things just don’t mesh well.

Let me explain. As I mentioned in the post itself, BlueDwarf's "rule enforcement is informal, and I admit I've stumbled upon some... peculiar opinions and takes during my time on the platform,…

  44. Why I've Stopped Playing FFXIV

    MMO Casual [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-07 15:00 UTC·Joar·best 0.92 · details

After a pretty solid week of World of Warcraft discussions, I thought I'd take today to being to toss in some discussions on other games. I gave Final Fantasy XIV a real shot. Not a weekend, not a free trial I abandoned in the starting city. A couple of years, an actual subscription, a character and jobs I put genuine hours into. And I still stopped. This is my attempt to be honest about why, without doing the tribal thing where you have to trash one game to justify playing another. And of cours…

I said we'd get there! And we have. Took a while but it won't be worth it. Well, how could it be? It's a post about a limited-time event in a game that, by my count, two people who follow this blog might be playing. And all the event involves is fishing. It's not proper fishing, either. Not even by the standards of the game itself, which aren't exactly rigorous to begin with. Fishing in Neverness To Everness isn't one of the most sophisticated representations of the pastime I've seen in a game.…

I started playing this the other day, and finished the prologue the other day, but decided I would still play this, and it’s a game that I can enjoy. It’s from the same game studio that did Gas Station Simulator, and it’s something I can play on my own which... Continue reading

  47. Things I still do as an adult

Yesterday my work was rather entertaining. A workmate went on vacation for today and tomorrow, and there were a few tasks I had to do on their stead. This was nothing unusual, he covers for me plenty as well. However, I do wish things had allowed for at least a bit more time to write a post. I did have a relatively easy idea which was a quick draft before my actual post of the day. So, here’s a list of things I still do as a young adult that most of society expects me to stop doing, or something…

I do not do any Phoneblogging. Zero. None. Zilch. The closest I get is reading my RSS reader and saving posts to a blog ideas list. As I get older, I just don't want to mess with my phone for in-depth things, and blogging, for me, qualifies as something in depth. I scroll Mastodon, I scroll my RSS reader, I get Home Assistant alerts, and I scroll Instagram reels for fun. That's pretty much the only things I use my phone for. Oh, I guess I use it to ask Rachelle questions when I'm grocery shoppin…
