Python A-Z is a blog series about Python. Each day, I share insights, ideas and examples for different parts of Python development that match with the letter of the day. Blaugust is an annual blogging festival in August where the goal is to write a blog post every day of the month.
Programming languages have many ways to combine literal strings and variables. For a decade now, we in Python land have been able to enjoy the beauty and elegance of f-strings.
f-string is a string that is prefixed wi…

It's currently Blaugust, and so I'm counting all my blog posts this month as Blaugust posts, including the Linkdumps. I told a friend about it and she laughed, because "blau" in German means "blue", like the colour, but it can also mean being drunk. And I had this thought too... Blaugust sounds a bit like I'm planning to spend the month getting hammered. Sometimes a totally innocent or meaningless word in one language can mean something entirely different in another language. I'm always reminded…

“Rannalli”, printed in a hand writing-style script in an oval, flanked by two checkerboard flags and a background of jagged shapes, remains deeply lodged in my mind.
The Rannalli logo and name haven’t become deep lore among other skaters from the 1980s in the way that Vision, Sana Monica Airlines, or Gordon & Smith remain revered, however. And the heavily pixelated image above isn’t mine. It’s an ebay image found linked from this Vintage Longboards post. From what I can gather in an hour or so o…

A decade ago I wrote a post about blogrolls and the practical and social issues surrounding them. At the time, the version of Squarespace I was using didn’t easily support such things or at least wasn’t able to do so in a manner I liked, so I didn’t have one. Ten years later Squarespace as a hosting platform has far greater functionality, hence I recently decided to add a blogroll. That was in March this year. However it just wasn’t really fit for purpose. So I decided to revise it a few days ag…

I really hate slow-rolling things. I like to work quickly, get task after task out of the way quickly and efficiently. At work, that means my numbers go higher, leads to me getting better raises, more access, more good stuff that I wouldn’t get to do otherwise. In my games, I like being able to chew through quests, missions, levels, and be able to take my time with the story parts I find important. That way if I find something I like, I can engage with it like I want to, instead of being pressed…

I was almost tempted to watch an episode of the show attached to this line before writing but decided I didn’t care that much about the lore here. I barely watch Transformers cartoons and I have a ton of those. From my brief bit of research, Armorsaurs is a Disney+ show based on a Korean show called Armor Saurs, with a space. Its a sort of, Korean Sentai show, Sentai being shows like, Power Rangers and Kamen Rider. Normal people who power up with fancy devices into armored fighters who often als…

I’ve been monitoring the fires in Spokane, Washington the past few days. There is a very good chance my childhood home there, were I lived for about 18 months or so, is gone. But my grandparents former home is fine.
When I was a kid I’d go to my grandparent’s house for a week or two over summer. One summer there was a large fire on Old Trail and up on the southern hill from the Spokane River. We could see the fire from the porch across the river, but could also see the Old Trail fire ignite tree…

The last few years I’ve been on a handful things that have been shared out, but I’ve not posted about them. I’ve started to add them to my homepage, about page, and an old media pages. Posting things here, sometimes slips my mind.
The first two are for a company I’ve long been a fan of The Omni Group as I’ve used OmniGraffle and OmniOutliner around the time I picked up my first Mac for myself in 2001. The two products may have been included with the purchase of Mac and were great apps that have…

The Z323 said goodbye
It all started last Wednesday. I wanted to listen to some lo-fi music while coding. I turned on my speakers, and nothing happened. I tried turning them off and on again: nothing. I even plugged them into another wall socket, but the LED stayed dark.
It came as a surprise. I had that 2.1 speaker system for 15 years and never had any problems with it. It also never showed any signs of issues before it broke.
It was a Logitech Z323. The first movie I watched with it was The Fe…

Which is to say, it’s fricking awesome as a whole!

It is far too easy in these modern times to ignore or even believe that good things are coming. And it’s also easy to dismiss excitement at upcoming games as dismissive of the wider global horrors; some temporary panacea that just delays the drop into the void.
I feel differently. I have always maintained that being excited for new things in gaming is a wonderful feeling, and one that I’m very often swept up in, particularly when it comes to MMOs. I also think that if all you look at are the bad…

Wilhelm over at The Ancient Gaming Noob posted about the sad state of affairs at the modern incarnation of Electronic Arts. What EA has become over the past thirty years is both sad and despicable: they are often times more damaging to gaming and the industry than they are beneficial. And now the stage is set, as Wilhelm describes, for things to become much worse.
Where EA is going now is clearly tragic: a lot of great developers and teams will be harmed in the impending bloodbath as the Saudis…

Cataclysm is the expansion that took the world I'd spent a few years in and rearranged the furniture while I was out of the room. Deathwing came up through the middle of Azeroth and broke it, and Blizzard used that as the excuse to rebuild the entire old world. Every low-level zone I'd leveled through a dozen times was suddenly different. That was the whole pitch, and it landed as a strange mix of exciting and unsettling.
I have complicated feelings about it, and I think most people who were aro…

Fishing. Ah, fishing...
Every MMORPG has to have it, for reasons that I find hard to imagine. Is it such a universal pastime? I know it used to be ranked the #1 participatory "sport" in the United Kingdom, when I was growing up in the 'seventies, but people had fewer ways to entertain themselves in those deprived and forsaken times.
You know what? Let's fact-check that. Was it ever that popular? Is it still? It always seemed unlikely to me but I didn't have the worldwide web and an AI assistant…

In this modern blogging age how do we make our writing last?

Sure, I like electronic gadgets. But I dislike planned obsolescence more.
It’s one thing when the newer model really is that much better. “All About the Pentiums” exaggerated it, but computer hardware in the 1990s really was improving by leaps and bounds. (And the software was devouring those performance gains, both in demanding more resources, and being less efficient as programmers were told to optimize for their own time, not for disk space or RAM.) That eventually settled out around the time…
