  1. First the Migraine, Then the Headache

    K-Squared Ramblings [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-04 05:29 UTC·Kelson·best 0.96 · details

I had a migraine this morning that really threw me for a loop. Then I spent the afternoon and evening dealing with a different kind of headache: getting my phone number transferred to a new(ish) phone. We picked up a Fairphone 4 a few years ago as sort of a hedge in case the electronics industry and/or tariffs and/or international trade went bonkers and one of our phones died. (We weren’t expecting all three.) The teenager used it for a bit before we bought him a phone that was closer to what he…

Just a little story about how I came to own a Divorce Ring, prompted by seeing mention of divorce rings on another blog that I read.

For Blaugust2026 I have anchored to this page published by Krikket on her blog Nerd Girl Thoughts for reminders and ideas on ways to participate. Very helpful when I am feeling inclined to dismiss every idea I have because (insert any reason that comes to mind). •• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ •• •• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ •• The first blog I created was in 2000 and on a site called Cosgrove Capers. 4. A non-work day

    Kevin Cunningham - @dolearning [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-04 00:00 UTC·best 0.96 · details

I'm not very good at taking time off. Even when I'm not working, I end up working. Part of that is being self-employed - the pressure always seems to be there - but another part is just poor discipline on my part. This week, my son and I are home with the dog while my wife and our younger offspring are in Manchester for a music camp. Here's what we did: Walked the dog Took the van to get photographed to estimate for some repairs on body work damage Went bouldering Watched some TV Had lunch Playe…

  5. Are we becoming too paranoid about AI slop?

    82MHz [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-04 00:00 UTC·best 0.94 · details

Recently a person I'm following on Mastodon posted a picture of two cats. It was cute and kind of funny. I saw it, chuckled and forgot about it. But then someone replied that they ran the picture through an AI checker and according to this the picture was very likely AI generated. So the original poster apologised for not checking whether or not the picture was AI generated slop and to make up for their blunder, posted a different cat picture that wasn't AI generated (hopefully). A similar thing…

  6. Norfolk county DA candidate

    nosrednayduj [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-03 23:42 UTC·best 0.90 · details

Today's political action is not being counted, because it wasn't a protest. Valerie and I went to a candidate's meet and greet. Our county is having an election for the district attorney, and there have been a couple of high-profile scandal-ridden cases recently which have caused the current DA to choose not to run for reelection. There are 7 candidates, which is kind of a lot. We met Macy Lee, who is a woman of Chinese descent. She's been an attorney for three decades, on both sides of the cour…

A Library Without Walls My grandfather's library I grew up among books. Both of my parents are avid readers. My sister is a book lover too. When she has time, she posts amazing articles about books and book series on plenty of different topics. It's easy for her: she reads at an incredible speed. Her blog, Katherine's Bookstore is in Hungarian, but even with a browser's translation, it's a treasure trove. My maternal grandfather’s library always fascinated me. It was a space where every part of…

  8. Searchtodon - some thoughts

    re: nyman [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-03 19:30 UTC·best 0.94 · details

I follow a lot of people on Mastodon and I see lots of toots fly by. Every now and then I want to find one I have seen at some point, but that is currently hard to do. This sounds like a problem more people might have yes? Yep, and to fix that Jan Lehnardt built Searchtodon. But there was a strong backlash. It might have been bad timing, as it was around the time of one of the mass migrations from twitter to the fediverse and people felt their old ways of doing things were threatened. Whatever t…

At the end of July I went on holiday to Portmadog, Wales, staying at a caravan park with some family and my son. It had been a long day of travel full of concern about my son who was uncharacteristically deciding not to eat anything and who was later travel sick, causing us to pull over on a mountain pass road in Snowdonia. By the time we got to the caravan park there was little to do except check out the amenities and get some food in for the week ahead. After that, my boy ginally decided to ea…

Well, this is embarrassing... Remember when I complained about not being able to remember my login details for Wuthering Waves? I wrote a whole post about it under the (entirely intentionally) click-baity title "Wuthering Waves Is Dead To Me Now." Remember how, in that post, I said "I've tried everything and every account I can think of and nothing works"? Yes. Well. About that... It turns out either I didn't try every account after all or else my capacity for thinking is so diminished I probabl…

In The Average Fourth Grader Is a Better Poet Than You (and Me Too), Hannah writes: When I was a child I believed that one day I might be allowed to cross into an alternate dimension by walking through a quilt hanging on my living room wall. Reading this reminded me of the things I believed as a child... 2 days, 14 hours ago I was terrified of swallowing seeds because I believed they would grow in my stomach and sprout through my head. I also scrunched up my face whenever someone blew dandelion…

  13. July 2026

    Heart Soul Machine [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-01 00:00 UTC·best 0.96 · details

The Vibe July has felt fairly momentous. It started with wrapping up my old role – a couple of team lunches, some farewell drinks on a cold and cozy evening, and a fairly anticlimactic send-off from senior leadership. What I did get, and what actually mattered, were some genuine words from my team, past and present. That meant a lot. Looking back, the biggest accomplishment in that role wasn't any single project or initiative – it was building the team itself. Bringing together people with genui…
