Wow, pico.sh looks very enticing.
I found it last night after reading Brennan’s post, Free Speech and the IndieWeb, which discusses the reasons he doesn’t use Cloudflare. See also his longer post on this topic.
I have been feeling a little dirty about using Cloudflare for hosting this little indie blog. Plus, Cloudflare frustrated me this week when it wouldn’t update my broken site (my fault for breaking it; Cloudflare’s for not letting me fix it). So Brennan’s post provoked me to look for alter…

I don't know if you're familiar with Storyworth, but it's a site dedicated to capturing your loved one's memories and keeping them in a book. A year ago, my wife "gave" me a year subscription to the site (part-time job) for my birthday and said "DO IT!" I'm like, but what about my stack of journals and blogs?
Some of those journal entries are adorably written in crayon
Her response was, "There's no way I'm reading your stack of journals! That is crazy, and I can barely read your handwriting!" Ok…

Questions are taken from the Blaugust post here.
What made you decide to do Blaugust this year, and what are your personal goals? #
I saw the event last year halfway through and have been thinking about it since. I would like to try for the 31 but I am working and going to school so my expectations are a bit flexible.
Did you start preparing for Blaugust before the August 1st start date? If so, what did you do ahead of time to make sure you’d stay on track? #
I did not prepare at all and it show…

It's currently Blaugust, and so I'm counting all my blog posts this month as Blaugust posts, including the Linkdumps. I told a friend about it and she laughed, because "blau" in German means "blue", like the colour, but it can also mean being drunk. And I had this thought too... Blaugust sounds a bit like I'm planning to spend the month getting hammered. Sometimes a totally innocent or meaningless word in one language can mean something entirely different in another language. I'm always reminded…

I’ve been monitoring the fires in Spokane, Washington the past few days. There is a very good chance my childhood home there, were I lived for about 18 months or so, is gone. But my grandparents former home is fine.
When I was a kid I’d go to my grandparent’s house for a week or two over summer. One summer there was a large fire on Old Trail and up on the southern hill from the Spokane River. We could see the fire from the porch across the river, but could also see the Old Trail fire ignite tree…

Even as I’m sitting down now to type this, I think it might be a Very Bad Idea indeed. Let’s see where we end up, shall we?
There’s been a lot of folks talking about the “policy” that was appeared at the end of this year’s announcement post, but I’ve noticed that not everyone is getting the chronology right. So that’s where I’m going to start.
In 2024, we had two bl…

If Emily Dickinson had written her poems on her Wordpress blog, her host would have deleted them outright when the bill came due. Instead, her sister found 1,800 poems written on paper and stored in a drawer. Words written on paper take an intentional decision to destroy them whereas words written online usually require an intentional decision to keep them. In this modern blogging age how do we make our writing last?
I do not have any important writing on this blog but I do want my family to hav…

It's already been almost a month (how??) since I deleted all my corporate social media accounts. Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, Discord, among others. And as a result I've found myself looking at other social platforms and communities to fill my time with.
Because social media is not inherently bad—it only starts becoming bad when multi-billion dollar businesses are created around using people as products and extracting as much information and value as possible out of every single one of them.
Now…

Morning!
It’s another very early morning and an unusually busy day for me.
I have a dental cleaning appointment this morning, so I have to hop to it and get ready for that. (For me, that means being ready hours early and then fretting about remembering to bring everything I’m supposed to and getting there at exactly the right time.)
Afterward, a friend is coming by with a truck to help throw out an old mattress and sofa that won’t fit in my SUV. It’s an old memory foam mattress, so it’s huge, he…

Simple hashtag proposal for dates: datetags for the #indiewebIn summary by example:* #2026_08_04 ISO8601 YYYY_MM_DD date of this post* #2026_216 ISO8601 YYYY_DDD ordinal date of this post* #2026_08 ISO8601 YYYY_MM month of this postMany of us posting on the indieweb often post about things in the past. Photos, events, or sometimes throwback posts. Hashtags communicate and aggregate what posts are about. Posts about the past are usually about a specific date in the past, or sometimes an entire mo…

I can't say I had any plans to do the Community Builder thing for Blaugust this year. The very fact that I'm calling it "the Community Builder thing" suggests a distinct lack of empathy with the concept. I'm not a great one for achievements or badges or titles, although I do quite like a title in a game. I'm not that struck on socializing either although I'd say I was social enough. Emphasis on "enough". Just enough. Not more.
One thing I do like, though, is talking about myself. And another is…

I had a migraine this morning that really threw me for a loop. Then I spent the afternoon and evening dealing with a different kind of headache: getting my phone number transferred to a new(ish) phone.
We picked up a Fairphone 4 a few years ago as sort of a hedge in case the electronics industry and/or tariffs and/or international trade went bonkers and one of our phones died. (We weren’t expecting all three.) The teenager used it for a bit before we bought him a phone that was closer to what he…

Recently a person I'm following on Mastodon posted a picture of two cats. It was cute and kind of funny. I saw it, chuckled and forgot about it.
But then someone replied that they ran the picture through an AI checker and according to this the picture was very likely AI generated.
So the original poster apologised for not checking whether or not the picture was AI generated slop and to make up for their blunder, posted a different cat picture that wasn't AI generated (hopefully).
A similar thing…

A Library Without Walls
My grandfather's library
I grew up among books. Both of my parents are avid readers. My sister is a book lover too. When she has time, she posts amazing articles about books and book series on plenty of different topics. It's easy for her: she reads at an incredible speed. Her blog, Katherine's Bookstore is in Hungarian, but even with a browser's translation, it's a treasure trove.
My maternal grandfather’s library always fascinated me. It was a space where every part of…

I follow a lot of people on Mastodon and I see lots of toots fly by. Every now and then I want to find one I have seen at some point, but that is currently hard to do.
This sounds like a problem more people might have yes? Yep, and to fix that Jan Lehnardt built Searchtodon.
But there was a strong backlash. It might have been bad timing, as it was around the time of one of the mass migrations from twitter to the fediverse and people felt their old ways of doing things were threatened. Whatever t…

Well, this is embarrassing...
Remember when I complained about not being able to remember my login details for Wuthering Waves? I wrote a whole post about it under the (entirely intentionally) click-baity title "Wuthering Waves Is Dead To Me Now." Remember how, in that post, I said "I've tried everything and every account I can think of and nothing works"?
Yes. Well. About that...
It turns out either I didn't try every account after all or else my capacity for thinking is so diminished I probabl…

The Vibe
July has felt fairly momentous. It started with wrapping up my old role – a couple of team lunches, some farewell drinks on a cold and cozy evening, and a fairly anticlimactic send-off from senior leadership. What I did get, and what actually mattered, were some genuine words from my team, past and present. That meant a lot.
Looking back, the biggest accomplishment in that role wasn't any single project or initiative – it was building the team itself. Bringing together people with genui…
