I don't know if you're familiar with Storyworth, but it's a site dedicated to capturing your loved one's memories and keeping them in a book. A year ago, my wife "gave" me a year subscription to the site (part-time job) for my birthday and said "DO IT!" I'm like, but what about my stack of journals and blogs?
Some of those journal entries are adorably written in crayon
Her response was, "There's no way I'm reading your stack of journals! That is crazy, and I can barely read your handwriting!" Ok…

I’ve never done an “introduction”-style post on here. The closest is perhaps the possessions post from two Blaugusts ago. Well, it’s introductions week for this year’s Blaugust, and one of the prompts is “Ten facts”, so here are some facts about me.
I’ve slept with the same yellow-orange blanket for over 20 years. This sounds weirder than it is, I think? It’s not a “blankey” or anything, I don’t obsessively sleep with with it every single night without fail — it’s just a blanket that has served…

My state of health has been a bit rough for the past twelve months or so. I had severe sciatic pain, then a mental breakdown, and following that some nearly crippling anxiety. But it is all good: I’m living a good life, just struggling a bit.
My list of maladies is incomplete, however. I developed an intestinal disorder of some kind starting in April, and it adds to my other problems in interesting and diverse ways.
NOTE: This post will be covering some unpleasant topics about things like bowel…

I go to sleep with headaches, I wake up with headaches, and I don’t complain about them because it’s pointless. I have suffered headaches for the last 30 years. Most were brought on by certain medications I took as a teenager, other are just everyday things. Plus lets not forget... Continue reading

It was my birthday yesterday! Thought I'd take this opportunity to just do a quick rundown of events on or around my birthday and say that I'm happy I'm still alive and writing about it. How's that?
My typical birthday celebration consisted of two things: Eating at Spaghetti Factory and watching an IMAX film. Although I didn't do either of those things yesterday, I did see a movie a couple days before and eat at ye' old Spaghetti Factory three weeks ago, so . . . it still counts!
We saw Spider-M…

We're only on the 5th day of Blaugust and I'm already struggling to think of something to write about. I went through the list of prompts and nothing is standing out there either. I think I'll just do a little freewriting (freewheeling?) today and see how it goes.
Let's start with some music I've been loving lately:
The album Come Closer by Tomora - a trip-hop collaboration between Aurora and Tom Rowlands of the Chemical Brothers. I always love seeing new trip-hop releases because it's a bit of…

It’s smoky in Portland right now. For the moment, we’ve got the worst AQI of any “major” city in the world.
Here’s what it looks like outside (image from Oregonlive.com):
It’s a drag. My kids both have camps this week that have either been canceled or compromised. Exercising outside is a bad idea. I’m monitoring our indoor AQI with a couple sensors and redistributing air filters around the house.

Morning!
It’s another very early morning and an unusually busy day for me.
I have a dental cleaning appointment this morning, so I have to hop to it and get ready for that. (For me, that means being ready hours early and then fretting about remembering to bring everything I’m supposed to and getting there at exactly the right time.)
Afterward, a friend is coming by with a truck to help throw out an old mattress and sofa that won’t fit in my SUV. It’s an old memory foam mattress, so it’s huge, he…

Portrait of a Hard Edge
I am just not having a winner week. I started a new med in Sunday and have landed very firmly in the nausea side effects. This drug is akin to a GLP-1 so it's probab,y the effects on digestion + some of these act by slowing down how quickly you digest which can lead to food fermenting. Which makes you gassy.
So I am gassy and uncomfortable. Really hope this subsides. So here's is today's drawing. Straight lines are hard. I do not have a steady hand.
hello my name is Simon

I have been working to check off boxes so my brain will be quiet. Then when I complete one task, another worry presents itself. My mental health hasn’t been too great after being in flight or fight mode for a month. I’m beginning to question how I function. Am I only trying to live up to people’s expectations?
I’m trying my best to be present and exist in the moment. I don’t want to take on too much or go into anything unprepared. I know what happens when I do. Struggling at some point or anothe…

My First Blog
Why yes, I will use that image so I don’t have to find one myself. Thank you!
The Blaugust community topic today is about your first blog. I actually think of this site as a continuation of my first blog, in a way. It’s all just “my thoughts that I put online” to me. A sort of live memoir.
This page from the Internet Archive isn’t really “my blog” but it’s one of the first things I ever published on the Internet. It’s a Quake match update on a web page owned by the sysop of the Qua…

I had a migraine this morning that really threw me for a loop. Then I spent the afternoon and evening dealing with a different kind of headache: getting my phone number transferred to a new(ish) phone.
We picked up a Fairphone 4 a few years ago as sort of a hedge in case the electronics industry and/or tariffs and/or international trade went bonkers and one of our phones died. (We weren’t expecting all three.) The teenager used it for a bit before we bought him a phone that was closer to what he…

Oldschool punk playlists being procured. Blogging. A stronger SDF presence.

Portrait of a Migraineur
Today was a migraine day so I spent it trying to sleep as much as possible while waiting for the meds to work. Not a whole lot experienced today. It the cracking open of my head. It's weeping it's weeping. Plasma and pain; lightning in the folds.
I struggle with art in that I feel like I have no real experience to art about. I have internalized some amount of "art is pain" and angst sort of cultural bs that makes it harder to be an artist. Makes me less wanting to try. W…

AH-- AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I've written a couple thousand words today and yesterday which, don't get me wrong, were really fun write-ups but if I'm going to commit to the trials and tribulations I have lined up for me (more writing, in the spirit of BlAugust) then I need to tone it back.
Not only on a literal, word count scale but on a metaphysical level. I need my soul to rest. I'm too introspective. I put images in my last post, I haven't done that in a while! Have I gone mad? Do I have a temp…

In The Average Fourth Grader Is a Better Poet Than You (and Me Too), Hannah writes:

Blaugust #2: How To slow down
I have around 3 pages full of blog post ideas in my personal journal (ironically, one of them is to post about my personal journal), and yet, before Blaugust at least, every time I sat down to blog I always found myself forgetting every single world in the English language, all twenty six alphabet soup letters, how to grasp the concept of communication in general. I found myself going through a sort of blogger's ego death where I tried to blog and instead became the…

Morning! It’s a gray and dismal rainy start to this Monday morning, the start of another work week. And, for me, the start of a new work sprint.
I already regret putting the Blaugust day in the post titles. I was trying to make it easier for anyone counting, but it really looks ugly.
MRI Complete
Yesterday I drove clear to the other side of the city to get an MRI on my neck. I drove a complete circuit around the circular bypass highways around the city.
The MRI itself was uneventful, and took ab…
