Sure, I like electronic gadgets. But I dislike planned obsolescence more.
It’s one thing when the newer model really is that much better. “All About the Pentiums” exaggerated it, but computer hardware in the 1990s really was improving by leaps and bounds. (And the software was devouring those performance gains, both in demanding more resources, and being less efficient as programmers were told to optimize for their own time, not for disk space or RAM.) That eventually settled out around the time…

It's already been almost a month (how??) since I deleted all my corporate social media accounts. Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, Discord, among others. And as a result I've found myself looking at other social platforms and communities to fill my time with.
Because social media is not inherently bad—it only starts becoming bad when multi-billion dollar businesses are created around using people as products and extracting as much information and value as possible out of every single one of them.
Now…

Since I happened to have posted something on August 1, I signed up and so far I have been posting every day. Ask a question of an LLM and you'll get an answer. Sounds good but is the answer actually correct and valid?
How do I compare two passwords in a timing-safe way?
Use secureCompare(a, b) from `crypto.utils`. It is timing-safe and recommended.
This might be spot on but it's told with a level of confidence and specificity that makes it challenging to disagree with. The problem is that in Node, the function is actually timingSafeEqual. Where is the LLM getting the information from?

I have spent just over a decade on Git Hub. I’m a hobbyist. Very little if anything I’ve had on there has been of benefit to anyone other than myself. Microsoft’s acquisition of GitHub in 2019 did not pass me by. I turned a blind eye. I think it’s fair to say my patronage is of no benefit to Microsoft.
Since spring 2025 I’ve used Git Hub to host and publish my Hugo blog. I’m getting something for nothing. That sits well with me since it’s Microsoft. It still feels a bit off though since I’m the…

Before we start, let me explain to those readers outside of the UK, the significance of a Dairy Milk Freddo chocolate bar and its relevance to this post. The “Freddo” is an 18g (0.63 oz) chocolate bar, in the shape of an anthropomorphic frog. When it was re-launched by Cadbury in 1990 (it had previously been manufactured by an Australian confectionery company in the seventies), it was priced at 10p (£0.10). It remained at that price until 2005 when a 1p to 2p increase began to occur each year. B…

It's like a fever dream. Or some well-detailed hallucination. The words I've read/heard from AI (via people using AI to narrate YouTube videos) has “enough” human-like mannerisms and gestures, but that makes it that much more perverse. I d…
