I hadn't looked in several year, but this blog was started 14 years ago in May 2012. If you look at my introduction, you'll see I was looking for a way to play MMOs casually and I guess that is still true today. I started with the first Newbie Blogger initiative, initiated by Syp or Justin Olivetti of Massively and Bio Break. When I just went looking for the image above, Google first reference was at Tales of the Aggronaut from back in 2012 when Belghast posted about it. That seems meaningful in…

A week of Blaugust, a honkaku mystery, some music for Bandcamp Friday, Traitors NZ, and more Zelda.
We are a week into Blaugust and I have managed a post a day so far. However next Monday I'm back to work for a full seven days so will probably not continue that pace. Probably another link post on Monday or Tuesday and a digest on Friday at least. I also need to spend some more time job hunting. I am only really employed at my current job until the end of September. Which isn't that far away. Try…

This is a letter I wrote years ago in response to a challenge. For it you had to write something to a quality you wished you had more of.
I've rewritten it to reflect who I am today.
What would your letter be to?
Dear courage,
I thought I’d write a letter to you instead of diving into my life to find stories that will put me in your light.
That is so hard to do as I don’t see myself as a very courageous person.
You see, courage, as I’m writing this I am in bed, comfortably miserable. Days on end…

Yesterday my work was rather entertaining. A workmate went on vacation for today and tomorrow, and there were a few tasks I had to do on their stead. This was nothing unusual, he covers for me plenty as well. However, I do wish things had allowed for at least a bit more time to write a post.
I did have a relatively easy idea which was a quick draft before my actual post of the day.
So, here’s a list of things I still do as a young adult that most of society expects me to stop doing, or something…

I do not do any Phoneblogging. Zero. None. Zilch. The closest I get is reading my RSS reader and saving posts to a blog ideas list. As I get older, I just don't want to mess with my phone for in-depth things, and blogging, for me, qualifies as something in depth. I scroll Mastodon, I scroll my RSS reader, I get Home Assistant alerts, and I scroll Instagram reels for fun. That's pretty much the only things I use my phone for. Oh, I guess I use it to ask Rachelle questions when I'm grocery shoppin…

Morning! This is my third attempt at today’s blog post.
The first one was going to be a very helpful post I prepared yesterday about some of the ways agentic AI has simplified my project and development life, some prompts and examples that I return to again and again. I decided to postpone that one because recent Blaugust discord activity reminded me that people absolutely hate AI.
The second one pointed that out, and generally mused about how the Internet is just filled with expressions of hatr…

Why did you make the blog in the first place?
Because I wanted to share my thoughts somewhere. I lurked this site for some time before starting my own blog. People’s thoughts on the smaller internet and breaking away from large platforms resonated with me. I also remember finding a couple of artists discussing art topics on the feed, that inspired me the most.

During the month of August I will be participating in Blaugust, a month long blogging challenge.
Today’s TDC asks:
Have you watched Stranger Things on Netflix? Even if you haven’t, imagine just how strange the world can get. Then write a story or create an image, or a soundtrack, or a video, of the Stranger Things you imagine. We won’t judge. Too much.
The worlds is strange in ways I don’t really want to imagine at the moment, so I jumped over to Lunapic to see what filters I could use. I chose…

Richard Adams’ Watership Down (New York: Macmillan, 1972) is one of the classic works of xenofiction (the fiction set in strange cultures, real or imagined), placed as it is among and between the warrens of rabbits in the English countryside. Lapine, the language he sketches for his rabbits, is arguably the best naming language ever created, and is a minimalist virtuoso performance, a haiku of a language compared to the sonnet of Sindarin.
The following documentation of the language is derived f…

You may have noticed that each of my Blaugust posts is hung on a hook that is another article (sometimes several), sometimes only loosely related to my topic.

Owning media again
This year, one of my aspirations is to rely less on the big streaming services for my entertainment. Why? Well, for one thing, if we give too much power to large corporations by getting overly attached to their services, that leads to monopolies, inequality and ultimately, democratic decline. How’s that for a positive opening?
Finding alternatives is easier said than done, because Tech Morality is Hard, and I would generalise that to “Corporate Morality is Hard”. Namely, keepi…

It's currently Blaugust, and so I'm counting all my blog posts this month as Blaugust posts, including the Linkdumps. Blaugust sounds a bit like I'm planning to spend the month getting hammered. Sometimes a totally innocent or meaningless word in one language can mean something entirely different in another language. I'm always reminded…

Reach is something I'm sure all game developers want for their passion project. I'm no different. People describe the empty nest like a threshold you cross once. Grief on one side, freedom on the other, a clean line between the before and the after.
