I do not do any Phoneblogging. Zero. None. Zilch. The closest I get is reading my RSS reader and saving posts to a blog ideas list. As I get older, I just don't want to mess with my phone for in-depth things, and blogging, for me, qualifies as something in depth. I scroll Mastodon, I scroll my RSS reader, I get Home Assistant alerts, and I scroll Instagram reels for fun. That's pretty much the only things I use my phone for. Oh, I guess I use it to ask Rachelle questions when I'm grocery shoppin…

This painting is the result of a YouTube tutorial that I found, and I think it turned out pretty cute. I’m still trying to learn how to use my watercolours properly, and sometimes I don’t really have any creative ideas but I do still want to be creative. Following along with tutorials can scratch that itch, and teach me some neat techniques.

Questions belong to Ava’s Space
Why did you make the blog in the first place?
Because I wanted to share my thoughts somewhere. I lurked this site for some time before starting my own blog. People’s thoughts on the smaller internet and breaking away from large platforms resonated with me. I also remember finding a couple of artists discussing art topics on the feed, that inspired me the most.
Why did you choose Bearblog?
Because of the community! It feels sincere and is active daily. I read throu…

In light of Blaugust, I've been looking over some of my past posts here to get ideas, and I've realized that...I love this blog.
Sometimes I get self-conscious about my writing here, like it's not very good or interesting enough for anyone to want to read. And it is largely personal, largely for myself to be able to look back on and reminisce about times gone by. And that's exactly what I've been doing lately, so I suppose it's serving its purpose well.
I've always said that the point of this bl…

I've spent today reading through a blaugust 2026 RSS feed that I imported courtesy of 82MHz. Thank you! It's been really nice to have all the blogs in one place in my RSS reader and has pushed me to make a point of reading even more of folk's blog posts. Very fun. I'm also trying to make a point to email people more this month. It makes my day when someone emails me about my blog posts (you mean people read these?) so I hope to make someone else's day in the same way.

Last night I spent more time in Najena in Everquest Legends instead of doing my usual Wednesday game of Dungeons and Dragons. It's too bad, but the DM had surgery last week and was struggling to sit and play our silly little games. On the upside he declared we can all advance to level seven for next week! The main tool I use for to write this blog is vim (specifically Neovim. “Vim” at this point is not really a particular program, but a clade of software.) I have been using it for many years now, so this is not surprising.
What is surprising (to me) is that I do not write (or at least draft) more posts by hand. I like writing by hand. I have quite a collection of analog writing instruments and I certainly am looking for ways to justify that. I have fountain pens, I have typewriters, I have far to…

Reach
Reach is something I'm sure all game developers want for their passion project. I'm no different. This game of mine has been with me since 2010, and it has slowly grown and evolved over the past 16 years. Only this year did I decide to actually put more effort into making it a reality, and I think I decided a little too late.
A few prompt entries back, the word was Charm, and I mentioned that I lack that — this ties into the same idea. To reach others, a developer needs some sort of networ…

I really hate slow-rolling things. I like to work quickly, get task after task out of the way quickly and efficiently. At work, that means my numbers go higher, leads to me getting better raises, more access, more good stuff that I wouldn’t get to do otherwise. People describe the empty nest like a threshold you cross once. The last kid loads the last box, the taillights disappear down the street, and you walk back into a house that has gone suddenly, permanently quiet. Then, the story goes, you stand in the doorway of a room that isn’t a bedroom anymore and you feel the whole thing land at once. Grief on one side, freedom on the other, a clean line between the before and the after.
That’s the version everybody hands you. It rests on two quiet assumpti…

It is far too easy in these modern times to ignore or even believe that good things are coming. And it’s also easy to dismiss excitement at upcoming games as dismissive of the wider global horrors; some temporary panacea that just delays the drop into the void.

Wilhelm over at The Ancient Gaming Noob posted about the sad state of affairs at the modern incarnation of Electronic Arts. What EA has become over the past thirty years is both sad and despicable: they are often times more damaging to gaming and the industry than they are beneficial. And now the stage is set, as Wilhelm describes, for things to become much worse.
Where EA is going now is clearly tragic: a lot of great developers and teams will be harmed in the impending bloodbath as the Saudis…

If there’s one game that perfectly encapsulates the rebellious spirit of the Dreamcast, it’s Jet Set Radio. It’s a colorful, high-octane game where you play as a gang of rollerblading graffiti artists tagging local landmarks to strike back at the cops, a mega-corporation and even the military. The premise is silly, but the gameplay is fun and the vibes are immaculate.

Cataclysm is the expansion that took the world I'd spent a few years in and rearranged the furniture while I was out of the room. Deathwing came up through the middle of Azeroth and broke it, and Blizzard used that as the excuse to rebuild the entire old world. Every low-level zone I'd leveled through a dozen times was suddenly different. That was the whole pitch, and it landed as a strange mix of exciting and unsettling.
I have complicated feelings about it, and I think most people who were aro…

Every MMORPG has to have it, for reasons that I find hard to imagine. Is it such a universal pastime? I know it used to be ranked the #1 participatory "sport" in the United Kingdom, when I was growing up in the 'seventies, but people had fewer ways to entertain themselves in those deprived and forsaken times.
You know what? Let's fact-check that. Was it ever that popular? Is it still? It always seemed unlikely to me but I didn't have the worldwide web and an AI assistant…

图1 《High Violet》專輯封面
专辑信息
专辑名称: High Violet
歌手: The National

For today's word, I want to talk about the main theme, aka the gist, of my world.
Nobody in my world got the whole truth, and nobody gets power for free.
Something happened to our world. The once shared, singular version of reality broke, and it turned our world upside down. In the scramble that followed, people reached for whatever they thought would keep them alive and only through trial and error did they learn what those choices actually cost them.

Splatoon Raiders is a clever mixture of Splatoon and Monster Hunter gameplay, stripping out the PvP and leaving pure single-player and co-op goodness.
