We have a lot of stuff. And I mean a lot. We live in a rather large house with a lot of storage space and over the years, particularly since the children all moved out, we've filled most of it up. So, now we're vaguely thinking about moving to somewhere smaller and more manageable for our twilight years, we're going to have to do something about that. And since it's going to be a long job, even though it's very unlikely we'll be going anywhere for a couple of years, I've already started on my ha…

If you couldn’t find yesterday’s post, that was my fault. I put the wrong time in the published date. I didn’t realize it until after I woke up. Yesterday I thought I had spammed the discovery feed after multiple posting attempts. I had originally written about the pancake breakfast I made. I wasn’t able to find it on the top of recents, so I disregarded the draft. Then I answered the Bear blog questions from Ava after reading Peige’s (aka Pretend Typewriter) own answers. I wanted to try for mys…

Since 2024, I’ve rarely left the house without my Hobonichi Weeks planner in my bag, and I’ve never missed an entry, achieving the rare and elusive “planner peace” with this journaling form factor. There are more than enough notes pages for me to record TTRPG sessions and process my thoughts through journaling on the go when needed. Though I’ve debating getting a five-year journal in the past, I love the thrill of a new Weeks cover too much to give that up. As we make our way through August, the…

Mists of Pandaria got laughed at before anyone had played a minute of it. Kung fu pandas. A whole expansion about kung fu pandas, plus a pet-battle system a lot of people immediately wrote off as WoW doing Pokémon. I remember the reaction to the announcement, and it was not kind. It also turned out to be one of my favorite expansions in the whole run, and I've never really backed off that. The joke fell apart the second you actually got to Pandaria. The place was gorgeous. Morning! It is a Saturday morning and I 100% do not feel like writing a blog post, and in fact, largely feel like I’m “over” the rush of renewed blogging energy that Blaugust brings every year and I’m ready to move on to another project. But alas, there are some 24 posts yet to be written. The “staying motivated” Blaugust topic week should be in the second week, not the last. This is the dual-edged sword of writing challenges. Writing something is easy. Writing something that’s worth reading 31…

This year I wanted to flesh out my reference book collection a little bit when it comes to art. I have a few books, but I’d like to get a few more on anatomy, and colour theory. I’ve never really been able to draw people, sticking to mostly organic shapes and landscapes, but it’s something that has always been on my ‘wish list’ so to speak. So I’ve been doing a bit of research, and plan on doing a bit of shopping (eventually). One ‘must have’ I grabbed, is the book pictured above – A Dictionary…

Mercy Over the years, I've read some great stories about countless adventures from people who played a TTRPG — only to encounter a horrible GM. The ones who are merciless, who seem to aim to hurt and punish their own table. I can't fathom that kind of gameplay, but to each their own. I'm a firm believer that actions have consequences, but I don't want to kill my players' characters because of a GM's power trip. That said, I'm not one to coddle my table either. This is a letter I wrote years ago in response to a challenge. For it you had to write something to a quality you wished you had more of. I've rewritten it to reflect who I am today. What would your letter be to? Dear courage, I thought I’d write a letter to you instead of diving into my life to find stories that will put me in your light. That is so hard to do as I don’t see myself as a very courageous person. You see, courage, as I’m writing this I am in bed, comfortably miserable. Days on end…

Richard Adams’ Watership Down (New York: Macmillan, 1972) is one of the classic works of xenofiction (the fiction set in strange cultures, real or imagined), placed as it is among and between the warrens of rabbits in the English countryside. Lapine, the language he sketches for his rabbits, is arguably the best naming language ever created, and is a minimalist virtuoso performance, a haiku of a language compared to the sonnet of Sindarin. Owning media again This year, one of my aspirations is to rely less on the big streaming services for my entertainment. Why? Well, for one thing, if we give too much power to large corporations by getting overly attached to their services, that leads to monopolies, inequality and ultimately, democratic decline. How’s that for a positive opening? Finding alternatives is easier said than done, because Tech Morality is Hard, and I would generalise that to “Corporate Morality is Hard”. Namely, keepi…

We're only on the 5th day of Blaugust and I'm already struggling to think of something to write about. I went through the list of prompts and nothing is standing out there either. I think I'll just do a little freewriting (freewheeling?) today and see how it goes. Let's start with some music I've been loving lately: The album Come Closer by Tomora - a trip-hop collaboration between Aurora and Tom Rowlands of the Chemical Brothers. I always love seeing new trip-hop releases because it's a bit of…

You've heard a few stories from my youngest days (and there's plenty more I will share), but how about we jump ahead a little to my college days? In fact, I just heard this song on the radio at the end of July and it gave me the idea for the theme and inspiration for my participation in Blagust this year. Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood I have a Media Studies degree. I don't bring this up often because I've never really done anything with it. I've taken my share of video classes where we ofte…

I stumbled upon the Duck and Cover book series (author: Benjamin Wallace) entirely by accident. In this instance I was sucked in by the marketing blurbs comparing the series to something by Douglas Adams with dark comedy and characterization. The books are definitely good: not Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett good, but worthy of a read. The premise and books There are six books currently in the series plus a book of short stories. The main series focuses on Jerry aka The Librarian aka a post-apo…

Although a big part of Blaugust for me this year is going to be figuring out what the heck this blog is actually about now, I thought it might be nice to do at least a couple video game centric posts over the course of the month. I like chore sims in general. Things like PowerWash Simulator, Crime Scene Cleaner, and even Hardspace Shipbreaker all fall into this category for me. Doing the same thing over and over and over again until everything is in order, or completely disassembled, or organize…

I love fountain pens. For a few years now I’ve started collecting a handful of cheaper pens to experiment with and figure out what sort of nib I enjoyed. I’ve got a few EF (extra fine), some M (medium) and some F (fine). I learned there’s a difference between EF in the East, and EF in the West, depending on manufacturers. I don’t own a broad nib yet, but that is on my list. None of my pens are particularly expensive, minus the one that I inherited from my MIL when she passed. From front left to…

  47. Blaugust 2026 (Week #1): The Reasons I Write – Amidst a World Threatening to Leave it Behind

Week 1 of Blaugust is themed as the “Welcome to Blaugust” week – but arguably, I’ve already covered the literal facts of the event, and my reasons for taking part, in my prior Week #0 post. However, I don’t want to divert too far from the main theme, so I’ve instead decided to answer a larger question, which is: why do I write? I started writing consistently on this site more than half a decade ago, and it’s fair to say that lots has changed in the meantime. I’ve been formulating and thinking ab…

I guess it’s official now that Mike Caulfield has finally blogged about the new film podcast we’re doing: Couch to 4K. In fact, we’ve been recording episodes since April as we’ve tried to figure out both our chemistry and some kind of workable format. I’m easy—I think everything I do is great, especially when it involves talking about movies. How wrong can one be?* We have three episodes out so far, and now that I’m back from my extended vacation and Mike has taken over production duties, things…

Yesterday I moved my blog to Hugo and, despite my rigorous testing locally and in a staging deployment, I broke my RSS feed in production. Perfect. 🤦‍♂️ The issue was that the Hugo baseURL setting wasn’t being applied properly, so all the post links were pointing at localhost. The scrappy, I’m-in-the-middle-of-dinner fix was to set it manually: hugo --baseURL "https://sals.place" build But today I hope to figure out why the baseURL setting in hugo.toml setting wasn’t taking effect. ...
