I read today a piece about digital cameras and wired headphones making a bit of a comeback. It’s not news. I’ve read about this a few times over the past few years. What comes around and all that. However, it struck a chord with me since some of this stuff I have never fully moved away from or have still got tucked away in a draw somewhere until I am minded to have a play or finally get rid of it in one way or another. I was thinking about taking a few pics and writing a post about some of this…

There's a desire we all share as humans – the desire for answers. We're conscious, we live, we search for meaning, and that meaning often comes down to specific answers to specific questions: what is going on, and why do things happen? A lot of our time and effort on this planet goes into seeking those answers. And throughout history, there has been an enormous and recurring appeal to find an Answer Machine – a device that reduces the effort required to get there.
This innate desire goes some wa…

Python A-Z is a blog series about Python. Each day, I share insights, ideas and examples for different parts of Python development that match with the letter of the day. Blaugust is an annual blogging festival in August where the goal is to write a blog post every day of the month.
Let’s take our first journey into the wonders of Django, my favourite web backend. One of the reasons I love it is its ORM which we’ll talk a bit more when we reach the midway of the month and letter O.

Over the years, I've read some great stories about countless adventures from people who played a TTRPG — only to encounter a horrible GM. The ones who are merciless, who seem to aim to hurt and punish their own table. I can't fathom that kind of gameplay, but to each their own.
I'm a firm believer that actions have consequences, but I don't want to kill my players' characters because of a GM's power trip. That said, I'm not one to coddle my table either. My players have learned that if I s…

If you visit the websites for such UK tabloid newspapers as the Daily Express or the Daily Mail you will no doubt encounter prominent stories about Megan Markle, Nigel Farage and “immigrants”. If these two august institutions are short of column inches, they’ll run a piece about how some former celebrity has had the unmitigated gall and temerity to get old. I mean WTF? How dare they do what human beings are genetically disposed to do. It’s outrageous. Similarly, head over to the Unherd website a…

Duane Kuiper, on the imminent end of his 36-year broadcast partnership with Mike Krukow (reported by Susan Slusser at the San Francisco Chronicle):
Look, your friendship never ends. It’s just there’s a certain routine about something that good you get to look forward to every day. In a lot of ways, it’s the beauty of baseball. I get to sit next to him tomorrow night. I can’t wait. And I felt like that in 1990.

Following up on yesterday’s pine-grabbing, if you’re unfamiliar with Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper’s colorful and unique baseball vernacular, Grant Brisbee’s 2023 “ultimate glossary” of the duo’s “greatest sayings” in The Athletic is a fun read. I was over on Wilhelm’s TAGN site today enjoying a good read about the disaster that is Xbox Games. I generally agree with everything he is saying: Microsoft has done a terrible job running their game business and it is showing. But I also have a somewhat different experience as a user of the Xbox console that I feel bears mentioning.
Note (mostly for Wilhelm’s benefit) that I did initially start to write this as a comment on his blog. But it started to get to be a bit too wordy, plus I’m curren…

I’ve never done an “introduction”-style post on here. The closest is perhaps the possessions post from two Blaugusts ago. Well, it’s introductions week for this year’s Blaugust, and one of the prompts is “Ten facts”, so here are some facts about me.
I’ve slept with the same yellow-orange blanket for over 20 years. This sounds weirder than it is, I think? It’s not a “blankey” or anything, I don’t obsessively sleep with with it every single night without fail — it’s just a blanket that has served…

I wasn’t planning to do all my Blaugust posts on tech stuff, but it seems to be working out that way this week. 🤷
Today I learned about hybrid MBR/GUID partition tables, where the GPT (not that kind) on a disk is duplicated in an MBR table for compatibility purposes. Those reasons are probably outdated, unless you’re running a really old operating system, because GUID partitions have been around a very long time now.
According to Wikipedia’s chart you have to go back to Windows 7 to find an OS t…

I was succumbing to my Hacker News habit recently and saw this post from Rands: The Title Cards in Blade Runner Are Fucking Amazing.
PT Mono was in the list of fixed-width fonts that made his cut. For some reason it stuck in my brain. Maybe because I hadn’t heard of it.
Later, I found myself perusing macOS’s Font Book app. There, in the relatively small Fixed Width collection of fonts, was none other than PT Mono. Turns out it’s a default font on macOS.

I’ve had this story rattling around in my head for a while now, and I wasn’t really sure what to do about it. You see, the latest livestream out of Star Citizen was… not a good look. At all. In a lot of ways. And while I haven’t played the game in a long time, it still affected me to watch.
For those who don’t have nearly two hours of their lives to devote to a stream VOD, just know that the presentation of the FPS combat that was showcased did not go to plan, or if it did go to plan, it hasn’t…

Some turned into poems (a sliver of what I wrote is on my Poetry :: vanderwal.net page). Some turned into short stories that picked up a few of the phrases and snippets, some…

Kids, we've just learnt that baggy jeans aren't worth it. You trip over them, they get ripped, they soak up water. We've been there.
It doesn't bother me. Because if these kids are lucky they too will one day be forty and eighteen-year-olds will look at them like that. Then they will know.

If you ask me to name the best story in any horror game, I’ll tell you to look no further than Silent Hill 2. Here's another song the radio introduced me to:
The Whitby Maid by The Outside Track
Pretty simple story behind this one. I used to work the night shift and I would try to tune into the local college radio on my way home. They played many songs I had not heard of. They didn't have anyone introducing the song choices so if you liked the song you had to try and look it up later by recalling the lyrics. This song eluded me for awhile until I could remember enough of the lyrics to find it. Here's so…

Richard Adams’ Watership Down (New York: Macmillan, 1972) is one of the classic works of xenofiction (the fiction set in strange cultures, real or imagined), placed as it is among and between the warrens of rabbits in the English countryside. Lapine, the language he sketches for his rabbits, is arguably the best naming language ever created, and is a minimalist virtuoso performance, a haiku of a language compared to the sonnet of Sindarin.
The following documentation of the language is derived f…
