We visited some friends recently, and while we were there, my daughter got to try out Dreamlight Valley. While she does not know many Disney films yet (except for the first Frozen movie… who is surprised? ;) ), she certainly knows Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Minnie, and Donald. She was really excited to see them walking around in the world.
Additionally, our friend showed her how to decorate the house and how your character can pet the animals and harvest apples. I already own the game, so this is some…

The Z323 said goodbye
It all started last Wednesday. I wanted to listen to some lo-fi music while coding. I turned on my speakers, and nothing happened. I tried turning them off and on again: nothing. I even plugged them into another wall socket, but the LED stayed dark.
It came as a surprise. I had that 2.1 speaker system for 15 years and never had any problems with it. It also never showed any signs of issues before it broke.
It was a Logitech Z323. The first movie I watched with it was The Fe…

The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners collab in Wuthering Waves has been over for a while now, but despite it having been pretty much my sole reason for picking up the game in the first place I’m still playing every day.
Which is to say, it’s fricking awesome as a whole!
To some extent that really doesn’t surprise me of course, as I’ve heard a lot of good things about it since its release two years ago. What does surprise me, however, is that some of the features I’d expected to like the least are the ones…

It is far too easy in these modern times to ignore or even believe that good things are coming. And it’s also easy to dismiss excitement at upcoming games as dismissive of the wider global horrors; some temporary panacea that just delays the drop into the void.
I feel differently. I have always maintained that being excited for new things in gaming is a wonderful feeling, and one that I’m very often swept up in, particularly when it comes to MMOs. I also think that if all you look at are the bad…

I guess you do not technically die in Stardew Valley… but the fact that combat and loss are part of the game remains an aspect I did not expect. But more on that in a bit.

Having passed through spring of year two we were on to summer and a new set of crops. That was an opportunity for my daughter to expand our growing area, adding in a couple more quality sprinklers and then once again walling it off to keep the farm animals out.

In a meeting today I ended by referencing the public service announcement (PSA) “It’s 10 PM: Do You Know Where Your Children Are?”. No one got the reference—except maybe by way of The Simpsons.
Here’s the actual PSA I remember:
For years this would air before the nightly news. It’s kind of wild to think that, 40 or 50 years ago, this was the moment parents were prompted to wonder where their kids actually were.
There are plenty of memes about how feral kids were in that era, but what struck me t…

Wilhelm over at The Ancient Gaming Noob posted about the sad state of affairs at the modern incarnation of Electronic Arts. What EA has become over the past thirty years is both sad and despicable: they are often times more damaging to gaming and the industry than they are beneficial. And now the stage is set, as Wilhelm describes, for things to become much worse.
Where EA is going now is clearly tragic: a lot of great developers and teams will be harmed in the impending bloodbath as the Saudis…

I read Coyote's Bubbles is a New Way of Recreating Old Problems which expresses so well why I am wary of this kind of thing. Not Bubbles specifically but the general mood. Which is that I try to stay away from anything that feels like a popularity contest.
Pretty early on I removed upvotes from my blog. Because I don't need to know that. But I didn't remove 'make discoverable'. My rationale, if there can be said to be one, is that the most recent discovery feed - the only one I look at - is just…

I brainstormed many of my post ideas in advance and I realized there's many of them that have to do with the radio. Here's a little one from when I was a teen.
Talking in your Sleep by The Romantics
One year for Christmas I asked for a boombox. I got a sleek round white boombox with a built in CD player. It was one of the best gifts I ever received. I would just lounge around and listen to the radio if I had nothing else going on. I actually didn't surf the dial as I had a regular station I like…

If there’s one game that perfectly encapsulates the rebellious spirit of the Dreamcast, it’s Jet Set Radio. It’s a colorful, high-octane game where you play as a gang of rollerblading graffiti artists tagging local landmarks to strike back at the cops, a mega-corporation and even the military. The premise is silly, but the gameplay is fun and the vibes are immaculate.
JSR is a very Y2K-era game. The atmosphere is all about youthful rebellion, but wrapped in cheery optimism. There are lots of cha…

Cataclysm is the expansion that took the world I'd spent a few years in and rearranged the furniture while I was out of the room. Deathwing came up through the middle of Azeroth and broke it, and Blizzard used that as the excuse to rebuild the entire old world. Every low-level zone I'd leveled through a dozen times was suddenly different. That was the whole pitch, and it landed as a strange mix of exciting and unsettling.
I have complicated feelings about it, and I think most people who were aro…

There are times when your social media feed surfaces an article that is so unexpected and wholesome that you feel obligated—nay, impelled—to share it. This is one such article, wonderfully written by Annie Rauwerda for Inverse. Don’t worry that it’s from 2022, or that it’s about a photograph from the Wikipedia page about high fives (a page I have apparently visited before, though I can’t imagine why). Simply set aside five minutes of your day and luxuriate in it. You can high five me later.

Fishing. Ah, fishing...
Every MMORPG has to have it, for reasons that I find hard to imagine. Is it such a universal pastime? I know it used to be ranked the #1 participatory "sport" in the United Kingdom, when I was growing up in the 'seventies, but people had fewer ways to entertain themselves in those deprived and forsaken times.
You know what? Let's fact-check that. Was it ever that popular? Is it still? It always seemed unlikely to me but I didn't have the worldwide web and an AI assistant…

Threadsnakes are (get this) snakes, in the family Leptotyphlopidae, and are also called blind snakes. They are very tiny, usually not exceeding 12 inches, and look like small earthworms. Upon closer inspection, they are not worms because they have tiny dot eyes (as if drawn on by pencil) and a mouth with a jaw!
They barely have much of a mouth, with the upper jaws being immobile and without any teeth. They're found pretty on pretty much every continent except for Australia but are…

High Violet
图1 《High Violet》專輯封面
专辑信息
专辑名称: High Violet
歌手: The National

In this modern blogging age how do we make our writing last?

Sure, I like electronic gadgets. But I dislike planned obsolescence more.
It’s one thing when the newer model really is that much better. “All About the Pentiums” exaggerated it, but computer hardware in the 1990s really was improving by leaps and bounds. (And the software was devouring those performance gains, both in demanding more resources, and being less efficient as programmers were told to optimize for their own time, not for disk space or RAM.) That eventually settled out around the time…

Rebranding rebellion is nothing new. Americans take it for granted that the war between the Confederate states and the Union was always called the Civil War, but it was not. During the war and in its aftermath, it was primarily called an “insurrection” or a “rebellion.” Its current name is a result of decades of lobbying by Confederate heritage groups and white Southerners committed to rejuvenating the South’…

The ability, as a professional, to essentially pick up your tools, find a new chair, and keep going. The skill is his. The relationship with his clients is his. The craft he's spent years developing is entirely portable. If a landlord puts the rent up, or an employer devalues his labour, he has real options. He can leave.
