  1. Popularity contests

    What the Fran [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-06 17:00 UTC·francescrossley·best 0.96 · details

I read Coyote's Bubbles is a New Way of Recreating Old Problems which expresses so well why I am wary of this kind of thing. Not Bubbles specifically but the general mood. Which is that I try to stay away from anything that feels like a popularity contest. Pretty early on I removed upvotes from my blog. Because I don't need to know that. But I didn't remove 'make discoverable'. My rationale, if there can be said to be one, is that the most recent discovery feed - the only one I look at - is just…

I brainstormed many of my post ideas in advance and I realized there's many of them that have to do with the radio. Here's a little one from when I was a teen. Talking in your Sleep by The Romantics One year for Christmas I asked for a boombox. I got a sleek round white boombox with a built in CD player. It was one of the best gifts I ever received. I would just lounge around and listen to the radio if I had nothing else going on. I actually didn't surf the dial as I had a regular station I like…

Adding to the fun of this Hugo migration, I accidentally published all my draft posts this morning. If you happened to see the actual words of those posts (they might be cached in your feed reader), I realize you now can’t unsee them. My sincerest condolences. I’ll do a followup post once I figure out what happened and how exactly I fixed it.

  4. Why I Love Jet Set Radio

    Kay Talks Games [exclude this blog] · 2026-08-06 15:21 UTC·kaytalksgames·best 0.99 · details

If there’s one game that perfectly encapsulates the rebellious spirit of the Dreamcast, it’s Jet Set Radio. It’s a colorful, high-octane game where you play as a gang of rollerblading graffiti artists tagging local landmarks to strike back at the cops, a mega-corporation and even the military. The premise is silly, but the gameplay is fun and the vibes are immaculate. JSR is a very Y2K-era game. The atmosphere is all about youthful rebellion, but wrapped in cheery optimism. There are lots of cha…

Cataclysm is the expansion that took the world I'd spent a few years in and rearranged the furniture while I was out of the room. Deathwing came up through the middle of Azeroth and broke it, and Blizzard used that as the excuse to rebuild the entire old world. Every low-level zone I'd leveled through a dozen times was suddenly different. That was the whole pitch, and it landed as a strange mix of exciting and unsettling. I have complicated feelings about it, and I think most people who were aro…

There are times when your social media feed surfaces an article that is so unexpected and wholesome that you feel obligated—nay, impelled—to share it. This is one such article, wonderfully written by Annie Rauwerda for Inverse. Don’t worry that it’s from 2022, or that it’s about a photograph from the Wikipedia page about high fives (a page I have apparently visited before, though I can’t imagine why). Simply set aside five minutes of your day and luxuriate in it. You can high five me later. (Via…

Fishing. Ah, fishing... Every MMORPG has to have it, for reasons that I find hard to imagine. Is it such a universal pastime? I know it used to be ranked the #1 participatory "sport" in the United Kingdom, when I was growing up in the 'seventies, but people had fewer ways to entertain themselves in those deprived and forsaken times. You know what? Let's fact-check that. Was it ever that popular? Is it still? It always seemed unlikely to me but I didn't have the worldwide web and an AI assistant…

August 6, 2026 Threadsnakes are (get this) snakes, in the family Leptotyphlopidae, and are also called blind snakes. They are very tiny, usually not exceeding 12 inches, and look like small earthworms. Upon closer inspection, they are not worms because they have tiny dot eyes (as if drawn on by pencil) and a mouth with a jaw! They barely have much of a mouth, with the upper jaws being immobile and without any teeth. They're found pretty on pretty much every continent except for Australia but are…

Sure, I like electronic gadgets. But I dislike planned obsolescence more. It’s one thing when the newer model really is that much better. “All About the Pentiums” exaggerated it, but computer hardware in the 1990s really was improving by leaps and bounds. (And the software was devouring those performance gains, both in demanding more resources, and being less efficient as programmers were told to optimize for their own time, not for disk space or RAM.) That eventually settled out around the time…

  45. A few book recommendations

Its summer (still) which means book reading times for many. Here are a few books I remember from the top of my head (which means they must have been influential to me). No specific order. Title and something I remember from that book. Non-Fiction Factfullness - Hans Rosling Look at the biggest number first if you want to make an impact. The attention fix - Anders Hansen Our brains evolved for a different kind of world, and it explains so much. The Checklist Manifesto - Atul Gawande Checklists ar…

Behold, it is I, the guy who continues to play new shiny videogames instead of sticking to my ongoing playthroughs. I’ve written before about my ongoing games, which games I would start over instead of resuming, why I abandoned them, and the like. This post will be different. Not a list of games, not excuses as to why I stopped playing them. My plan is to share with you exactly where I stopped playing and trying to remember what I was doing and where I was going! So, an excercise on my own memor…

  48. Debugging comments: Nope, its Dam Spam

I previously wrote about some adventures I was having with visitors to my site being blocked while attempting to post comments. I had a hypothesis at the time that the problem was related to a Cloudflare feature called Browser integrity check (BIC). However, I believe I’ve now disproven that as the (primary) cause: the real culprit appears to be a plug-in for WordPress called Dam Spam. The counter evidence I had two sources of contrary evidence regarding my Cloudflare BIC hypothesis after I disa…

It was my birthday yesterday! Thought I'd take this opportunity to just do a quick rundown of events on or around my birthday and say that I'm happy I'm still alive and writing about it. How's that? My typical birthday celebration consisted of two things: Eating at Spaghetti Factory and watching an IMAX film. Although I didn't do either of those things yesterday, I did see a movie a couple days before and eat at ye' old Spaghetti Factory three weeks ago, so . . . it still counts! We saw Spider-M…

We're only on the 5th day of Blaugust and I'm already struggling to think of something to write about. I went through the list of prompts and nothing is standing out there either. I think I'll just do a little freewriting (freewheeling?) today and see how it goes. Let's start with some music I've been loving lately: The album Come Closer by Tomora - a trip-hop collaboration between Aurora and Tom Rowlands of the Chemical Brothers. I always love seeing new trip-hop releases because it's a bit of…
