This is a Blaugust 2026 blog post.
I have a moderately sized home automation network, running Home Assistant. I support devices on WiFi, Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Matter/Thread. I am using the Nabu Casa ZBT-2 Thread radio for these devices.
Matter has not been a delightful experience. Yet, recently, when I’ve added new devices, I’ve opted for Matter.
Initially, I was in pairing hell. New devices almost never added. But I got over that.
Turns out that Thread requires IPv6 networking and I had that disa…

I had a migraine this morning that really threw me for a loop. Then I spent the afternoon and evening dealing with a different kind of headache: getting my phone number transferred to a new(ish) phone.
We picked up a Fairphone 4 a few years ago as sort of a hedge in case the electronics industry and/or tariffs and/or international trade went bonkers and one of our phones died. (We weren’t expecting all three.) The teenager used it for a bit before we bought him a phone that was closer to what he…

Weekly Whaaa…?
I use the ISO weeks from Monday to Monday, so ISO Week 2026-W31 is the week of 2026-07-27/2026-08-02.
Backyard Bounty of the Week
Over the Fourth of July weekend we picked up a few herbs and other plants for our backyard container garden.
It’s now a (notably smoky) month later and the pepper plant (named Pablo, naturally as it’s a poblano) has already doubled in size. It’s now at least a foot above the tomato cage it’s been climbing like a ladder. We’re letting the two delicious-l…

When the events I share on my weeknotes are few and far between, it’s often because I wrote a lot of posts already talking about stuff that was interesting to me during the week, so, yeah it happens sometimes! In any case, this is some of the other stuff that happened between July 28 and August 3, 2026!
📅 In case you missed it, I joined Blaugust for 2026, a month long event where the point is to write and participate as much as you want! Of coures, I’m going for the full 31 posts, though there a…

If you can't tell, I've been trying to scratch an itch. What is this itch exactly? To be honest with you, I don't know the specific answer to that. I just know what I've been orbiting and circling:
I love trying to solve the existential problem that is our (read: humanity's) relationship with technology. I love contributing to the digital commons and using my web development skills to give back and try to create things that are useful to others. I love asking the question "what do we owe each ot…

So, I’m taking part in Blaugust again. I’m not even going to try to do 30 this month. I’ll be happy with 5 or 10. But this is #1, so it’s a start.
The last time I wrote something, I talked about how I was considering going back to music subscription services simply because I missed their music discovery options. Self hosting was just not doing it for me in that regard. I really didn’t want to go back to paying for music, though. I have spent well over a year getting my own library up and running…

Woah. I only just experienced Path of Fire within the past year or 2, despite it being out for almost 9 years now. But it’s new to me and I played it, so that’s something.
Yesterday’s post was a stark reminder to me that, yes, I’ve been blogging on this site now for 14 years. 14 years! Over that time I’ve had a ton of changes in my life from jobs to cars to kids to my hair turning grey and yet here I still am. Tapping away into the void. It’s almost been a week since Everquest Legends officially released. I have a bad habit of waiting to long to start writing about a game and it feels like I’m about on that cusp for this one. I’ve been playing almost everyday, making slow but steady progress.
I come to EQL without the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia. In 1999, I was in second grade and I’m pretty sure I wasn’t even aloud on the internet. The most I used the family computer for at the time was playing with MS paint and pretending…

Kyle Orland at Ars Technica writes about the expanding trend of physical console game discs and cartridges that require internet connectivity to play, as tracked by the DoesItPlay organization:
Thus far, a full 27 percent of the physical releases they’ve tested require some sort of download to fix game-breaking bugs or obtain core game content that is not stored on the physical release itself. That ratio balloons to 34 percent for tested PS5 games and 50 percent for those on the Xbox Series X.
