Weekly collection of links from the feeds including some anarchism, an old Xerox bug, and blogs. It is the last day of Blaugust. I've unfortunately got about four blog posts I started but didn't have time to finish that I guess will go up outside of the Blaugust window but sort of technically were written inside of it. So those will come when I have time to do so around job hunting stuff this week. I will also do some sort of Blaugust roundup post this week and the weekly digest. Today I just wanted to get another weekly link post up after another tiring work week + three job interviews. The Blaugust self-report form Fedizinefest The Server Called Paranoia: Defend Autistici/Inventati Before September 25 via Christine Lemmer-Webber (@cwebber@social.coop) The United States government has listed Autistici/Inventati (A/I), an Italian anarchist hacker collective, as a terrorist group which means they will be economically isolated. Which is why their domains have been revoked and this is an internet archive link. Something to be concerned about if you care about decentralized internet services such as mastodon. To quote the article, this has established that "Building communications infrastructure for radical movements can itself be treated as terrorism." and if that seems concerning to you, but you don't consider yourself an anarchist, maybe it's time to read up on anarchism because clearly certain governments think otherwise. Natural history on canvas: Brueghel knew about bird-eating noctule bats by Romero-Vidal, Sánchez-Navarro, Tena, and Clavero (PNAS) via jackalopes at lucky instar Air traffic controllers allegedly left work early before fatal Air Canada crash at LaGuardia (CBC) And the real problem is probably going to turn out to be chronic understaffing. Which is likely due to under-funding of the FAA. Food and shelter have driven Canada's affordability crisis. Health care isn't far behind by John MacFarlane (CBC) Includes the actual CPI data rather than the inflation rate, for once, which is a much more accurate representation of real price inflation for everyday people. Disability benefits, of course, are only tied to annual federal inflation rates. The article goes through how corporate investment has bought up and monopolized an awful lot of services causing these 18-20% price increases. Xerox scanners/photocopiers randomly alter numbers in scanned documents by D. Kriesel This is an old story from 2014-2015 but worth noting this was pre-AI and not caused by OCR. I don't even remember how this came up, it was somewhere on a mastodon thread. But it goes to show how a very subtle software error can take ages for humans to even notice it or figure it out, even when it's just humans making human mistakes, and yet have huge sweeping consequences. Signal... kind of sucks as a messaging app by James Zhan I'm reading the baru cormorants by videodante Eating wheat successfully, painting without ink by hollie (Small Good Things) Monday Cleaning: Kitchen, Living Room by Peige (Pretend Typewriter) On Engagement: Blogging vs Video by Aywren I am one of the people who never comments, unless it's on mastodon, occasionally via email if people have it easily visible on their posts. I don't comment on youtube much either but that's largely because I largely only open youtube to see if there are new Taskmaster episodes. If I watch a video produced by an individual I do sometimes remember to comment but it's more out of a sense of obligation to Serve the Algo than genuine desire to have a conversation. I don't expect a reply. I don't trust youtube comment sections so I avoid even scrolling down to see them, unfortunately. Like with many things it comes down to community norms and convenience. OpenHome is an open source tool for moving Pokémon between game save files, including forwards and backwards through generations, like Pokemon Bank (which is shutting down in February). It is a desktop program though, you can't just run it on your Gameboy/DS/3DS, so you'd have to export your save files to a computer to do this I guess...? ⇄ Reply: mastodon+email $ Tip: ko-fi+liberapay 2026 Week 36 Links was last edited: 5 days, 20 hours ago
