The Labor Party are now the conservatives. I've been sitting with this for a big chunk of the year, turning it over and over. I keep coming back to the same conclusion: the Australian Labor Party no longer represents working people in any meaningful sense. Not in its policies, not in its priorities, and not in the people who run it. This didn't happen in a vacuum. The Liberal Party's drift toward the hard right created a space in the centre, and Labor moved into it – partly as an electoral calculation, partly out of comfort, and partly because many of the people now running the Labor Party have more in common with the people running the Liberal Party than they do with the workers they built the party around and are supposed to represent. Both parties have been captured by the same cohort: elite university graduates, mostly with law degrees, who made the right connections, moved through the right institutions, and landed in Parliament without ever really experiencing what it means to...you know, labour. They never experienced the squeeze of living pay-check to pay-check. Never had to go on welfare when things didn't go your way. When you're earning enough to accrue a property portfolio that's always appreciating, when your income outpaces the cost of living, when your kids can move into one of the houses you already own — you're not feeling the same pressure as the people voting for you. The evidence isn't hard to find. During a decade of housing unaffordability that has locked an entire generation out of the market, Labor offered no serious structural response. Negative gearing – one of the most straightforward levers available, a policy that actively rewards property investors at the expense of first home buyers – remains mostly untouched. Sure, it's been grandfathered since the first of July, but even with an absolute majority and mandate for change, they've still done nothing to address the fact that the remaining policy still costs the nation billions. The workers who can't afford to buy a house are still waiting. At the state level, Labor governments have gone further – actively restricting the right to strike in essential services, the most fundamental tool workers have ever had. The party of the labour movement is making it harder to organise. It would be funny if it weren't so damaging. The Greens aren't the answer to this, they are a brake, not a vision. They're useful for moderating the worst of what the dominant parties put forward, and holding a balance of power is genuinely important – but it's not a governing alternative. There's no coherent working-class agenda coming from the Greens, no alternative economic framework, no sense of what they'd actually do with power if they had it. In a bicameral, oppositional parliament, we somehow have two major parties that agree on most significant issues and a minor party whose primary function is to make those issues slightly less bad. Meanwhile, the Overton window keeps sliding right. The terms of political debate have shifted so far that what would have been considered mainstream Labor policy twenty years ago now reads as radical. The media landscape reflects this too – working-class voices, perspectives, and concerns are largely absent from the places where political narratives are shaped. Let's not even start on the racial makeup of the media being so far removed from reflecting society is it any wonder people are fleeing to alternatives? It's not that the workers don't exist any more ... they're still the majority of the population! They just don't have a seat at the table where the conversation happens. And the left hasn't helped itself. Rather than forming a broad alliance, the left has splintered into a thousand unique issue-focused groups, each with its own agenda and inability to connect with others. This "identity politics" (and I want to be careful here, because I believe each individual cause is correct) has fragmented what could be a formidable political coalition into competing interest groups. When everyone identifies as something different, no one identifies with anything in common. Solidarity requires a shared stake in a shared outcome. That's hard to build when the political energy is organised around difference rather than common ground. The working class – people who work for wages, who rent, who can't absorb an unexpected bill, who are one missed pay cheque away from genuine hardship – are the majority, and yet they don't have a political home. This is where it gets dangerous. Disaffected working-class voters don't disappear. They go somewhere, and right now that somewhere is increasingly One Nation. This is a party that has correctly identified systemic alienation and is at least talking about people who feel ignored, but it offers nothing useful in response. The appeal isn't ideological for most of these voters. It's emotional. Someone is finally angry on their behalf. That Labor has ceded this ground, that the workers' party has left working people so unrepresented that a hard right populist movement is filling the gap, is a profound failure. So here's the call. Labor needs to reclaim its foundation before it loses the plot entirely. Not rhetorically – not another campaign about "working families" delivered by someone who hasn't missed a paycheck in a decade – but substantively. Housing policy that prioritises people over portfolios. A wage policy that actually keeps pace with the cost of living. A restored right to organise. These aren't radical asks. They're the basics. They're what the party was built to do. If Labor won't do it, someone else needs to. A political movement genuinely organised around working-class interests, housing, wages, conditions, and the cost of living isn't a niche proposition. It's a majority proposition. The numbers are there. What's missing is the representation. The workers are the largest class in this country, and right now they are the least heard. That's not just a political problem. It's an opportunity for whoever is willing to take it seriously.
