A few months ago a regular on the CachyOS forum asked the community what they thought about increasing AI usage in posts. This is my response. (All typos original to the source & retained for posterity.) As more and more people are using “AI” tools, we get more and more “AI” created, formatted, “straigthened” etc. content here in the forum. Now I for myself am also asking some of my questions to perplexity.ai, simply because some of the answers it provides are not too bad and help me with my newbie-issues. But I see some folks getting really mad about anything that even slightly smells of LLM. So, can we have an open debate on that topic? And maybe even involve the admins? What is your personal stand on “AI”/LLM tools to answer questions around Linux/Cachy topics? Should this kind of “AI”-written texts be allowed here or not? From Open discussion on AI / LLM content: Opinions? Guidelines? What do the admins/moderators say? by HardCode4All @ the CachyOS Discuss Forum (Feb 5, 2026) My answer (Feb 16, 2026): As a newcomer to Cachy and the forum I just want to add my two cents. (Yes I am verbose, but that is the autism not a LLM). If I asked a question on this site and got a response and went back and forth a bit, I had a pleasant interaction with a human being and feel good about the distro and its community. If I later find out that person just copy pastes questions into an LLM and then copy pastes back in a response, or is a full on bot-run account, there is a feeling of betrayal. I thought I had a genuine human connection, but it wasn’t, it was just a computer program. Now that sours my opinion of the distro and I probably won’t bother coming back. I was given the equivilant of the Customer Service Chatbot, who would be happy about that? If the person responding to my question disclosed that they used AI to answer it, and then elaborated on what the LLM gave them, I would feel a bit let down and maybe sceptical about their response, but not as much. What this comes down to is the feeling that I am putting effort into thinking and learning about things and writing my ideas out clearly. The other person is not putting in that effort. So I feel cheated. Clearly my effort is not valued here. So why do I bother contributing? Why answer anybody else’s post? They might as well just ask a LLM right? Why bother having a forum at all? Regardless of all broader issues, if you want this forum to continue to attract real human beings, the things that actually make a community and generate the words and ideas that the LLMs are copying from, then you have to make people feel good about being here and like their contributions are valued. In general that means disincentivizing low effort or mean-spirited or transactional posts and incentivizing thought and effort and consideration. The LLMs are a symptom not the problem, but in the world we exist in they have a negative symbolic meaning for a lot of people who will just turn around and walk away the second they see any mention it. Whether that’s fair or stupid or irrational or whatever, it’s going to happen. So at the end of the day it’s up to forum admin/mods to decide who they want to encourage to stay here, what the purpose of this forum is, and how to best enable that. It would be a shame if a lessez-faire moderation attitude resulted in the forum dissolving because nobody really wanted to be here any more, but it has happened to a million forums before this and will happen again. ⇄ Reply: mastodon+email $ Tip: ko-fi+liberapay re: AI use in communities was last edited: 3 days, 21 hours ago
