Exit 8 is a sophisticated and claustrophobic psychological thriller directed by Genki Kawamura, which skilfully transforms a minimalist indie walking-simulator game into a cinematic existential enigma. This overtly metaphorical film renders the repetitive nature and drudgery of modern working life into a physical environment in which the lead character is trapped and must find a way out. A random, brutal maze filled with an atmosphere of indifference to the lab rats that find themselves trapped within. Or is it their personal guilt that has put them there? Genki Kawamura’s psychological mystery draws inspiration from the Japanese video game of the same name, as well as from the cyclical nature of Groundhog Day and endless corridors of the Overlook Hotel in Kubrick’s The Shining. Although there are jump scares and some ghoulish imagery, this is not a horror vehicle. Instead this is a disquieting psychological drama with a strong sense of morality. A commuter known only as (played by Kazunari Ninomiya) has a stressful train journey, filled with angry passengers who bully a mother with a crying child. He then receives a phone call from his ex-girlfriends who tells him she is pregnant and asks if he wishes to be part of their life. Wishing to avoid further phones calls and the magnitude of the situation, he disembarks the train and enter the underground passages that lead to the station exit. However, it soon becomes apparent that something is awry and that he is trapped in an endless loop of corridors, continuously passing the same things. A photo booth, a series of posters of the wall, various locked doors and even another lost passenger; “The Walking Man” (Yamato Kochi). However, a poster appears to provide clues to exiting this labyrinth. To reach Exit 8, the “Lost Man” must walk through the repeating hallways while obeying two rules. If he spots any subtle change in the environment, known as an anomaly, he must turn back. If he sees none, he must continues to the next instance of repeating corridors Movies based on video games often fall flat, failing to capture the spirit of the game they seek to translate to the screen. In the case of Exit 8, the film flawlessly interprets the unique brooding quality of its namesake. In fact the video game analogy permeates the plot in its depiction of commuters on the subway, grinding away at the various repetitive tasks that make up modern employment. The film quickly becomes a parable of parental anxiety as the “Lost Man” vacillates over what he should do with regard to being a father. It is especially pertinent plot theme, considering Japan’s current population decline and the resulting cultural unrest. Exit 8 also does something that is quite unfashionable in modern cinema, in that it takes a clear moral stance with regard to what the central protagonist should do. Horror films are plain in their ethical pronouncements and although not a horror, Exit 8 uses its baroque trappings to express similar sentiments. Exit 8 has a small cast of only four central characters and all are effective and compelling. The production design is clinical, stark and sterile and it doesn’t take long for the endlessly repeating corridors to become quite claustrophobic. If you set aside the stories analogous plot you still have an increasing series of unsettling events and some solid jump scares. Exit 8 is also a concise and well paced film that makes few missteps along the way. Its enigmatic final revelation and possible temporal elements lead to a conclusion that can be interpreted in several ways. However, the conclusion is very much in keeping with the overall tone of the film, which is more about the overall experience rather than just the narrative. A cinematic puzzle-box with some jump-scares along the way and a palpable sense of unease. Exit 8 is bold and thoughtful with what it does with such a simple but unsettling idea. A modest, well made and intelligent film. Permalink
