In Dickens’s era, being a “gentleman” was a rung on the social ladder, something you performed your way into. The protagonists of their time, Pip, Brownlow, David Copperfield spend a major amount of their lives as gentlemen. Today’s cultural phenomenon looks different. Our most iconic protagonists, Tyler Durden, John Wick, Jordan Belfort, Jack Sparrow, Dr. House, are charismatic, chaotic, and often explicitly anti-social. Restraint isn’t the aspiration; intensity is. A parallel shift shows up on the other axis. Female characters of the early-to-mid 1800s were largely written as reserved and remote. By the 2000s, the norm had flipped: heroines who carry their own plot, with no male lead required to anchor them. Some of this tracks the real emancipation of women in society. But art likely didn’t just reflect that change, it helped normalize it, making the working, independent woman feel like the default rather than the exception. Female leads of the 1800s like Agnes Wickfield or Dora Spenlow from David Copperfield, Melanie Wilkes from Gone with the Wind, or Fanny Price from Mansfield Park can be compared to Lara Croft, Katniss Everdeen, Imperator Furiosa and Daenerys Targaryen of recent times.Chronologically, between these 2 groups, we had the mixed types of characters such as Elizabeth Bennett, Jo March and Jane Eyre. Put together, these are two versions of the same claim: media doesn’t just mirror who we are, it previews who we’re about to become. If that’s true, both archetypes are provisional. Audiences will eventually tire of “brilliant but broken” men, just as they moved past the reserved heroine, and whatever replaces them, in film, music, or sports, will again double as a rehearsal for a new social norm. The deeper point is about art’s power, not any particular archetype. If storytelling can install an ideal, it can also retire one. That’s an argument for taking artists seriously as cultural architects, not just entertainers.
